WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF  HISTORY & INTERNATIONAL   STUDIES, FACULTY OF ARTS, NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA.

INTRODUCTION:

The Department of History & International Studies took off in 1993/94 Session as History & Archaeology unit under the then department of Arts. The pioneer lecturers were Prof. C.C. Agbodike, Mr.F.O.E. Okafor; and Dr. Mrs.N.E. Ojiakor. In 1996/97, it became a full department in the Faculty of Arts, under the headship of Prof. C.C. Agbodike, with six members of staff. In 2000/2001 academic session, Dr. N.E. Ojiakor became the HOD; and the department’s name was re-designated the Department of History & International Studies with six academic staff and two administrative staff.

Since then, the department became a hallmark of academic excellence; as more hands were brought in to beef up its new status. The Department’s Postgraduate programme commenced in 1998/ 99 Academic Session. The Department has turned out nearly six hundred graduates since its inception. The Department also publishes an academic journal: UZUH: JOURNAL OF HISTORY& INTERNATIONAL STUDIES; which was first published in the 2007/2008 session. Production for the second edition is currently in progress. Most academic staff of the department belong to the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN); while the students have their own association for the promotion of the study of History and diplomacy known as National Association of History & International Studies Students (NAHISS).
