DEPARTMENT OF AFRICAN / ASIAN STUDIES
Welcome to the Department of African / Asian Studies
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Igbo, African and Chinese Studies, as presently called, is one of the foundation Department in the Faculty of Arts of this University. From its inception, the Department was called Department of African Languages and from this, the nomenclature metamorphosed to the Department of African and Asian Studies, following the introduction of Chinese studies as one of the courses pursued by students in the Department and just about – 2010, the name was once again changed to the Department of Igbo, African and Chinese Studies in order to bring to focus the Igbo studies which is the main stay of the Department.
Since inception, this Department has been waxing from strength to strength. Apart from the fact that it has, through its well-thought-out programme, produced students who are indeed educated and sound in character and of course, who are in very high demand in the labour market, it is on record that the Department was one of the first Departments to produce a first class student in the Faculty of Arts and indeed, the first Department in the Faculty to produce Ph.D. students. The M.A. students already produced run in hundreds.
The Department, has in stock a bunch of well grounded, well educated and well trained teachers who not only are masters in their respective areas of specialization, but also know how to impart this knowledge to the students via the best pedagogical method. This, no doubt, goes to enhance the relationship between the lecturers and students. The Department owes these successes to the dedication to duty of the entire staff and the cordial relationship existing among the staff, on the hand, and the unalloyed support enjoyed by the Department as provided by the University Authority, on the other .
On this note, may we welcome our Departmental manual which, we hope will serve as a guide to both students and lecturers and as a mirror to our dear Department of Igbo, African and Chinese Studies.
