ABSU Medical Students’ Association seeks UNIZIK VC’s Support, Guidance
The Abia State University Medical Students’ Association has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, seeking his guidance and support on students’ welfare, alumni engagement and preparations for its forthcoming Health Week.The visit took place on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
Speaking during the visit, the President of the Association, Chukwuemeka Charles expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for receiving the delegation. He explained that the visit was intended to establish closer ties with the Vice-Chancellor, an alumnus of their institution, before the expiration of the association’s current administration.
He highlighted some of the challenges facing medical students at Abia State University, including difficulties surrounding the induction of graduating medical students. He also sought the Vice-Chancellor’s advice on how the association could contribute to addressing these challenges and improving the students’ learning environment.
The President further disclosed that the association was preparing for its forthcoming Health Week and hoped to benefit from the Vice-Chancellor’s experience and support.
In her remarks, the Vice-President, Harrison Chelsea, appealed for guidance on strengthening the association’s relationship with its alumni, particularly in mobilising funding and other resources for its activities.

Responding, Professor Anyaehie thanked the delegation for considering him worthy of the visit and shared insights from his experience in medical education and university administration.
On the issue of student induction, the Vice-Chancellor expressed concern over the challenges associated with exceeding approved admission quotas. Drawing from his experience at Imo State University, where he said he facilitated the induction of 188 students during an eight-month period following accreditation challenges, he advised the students to explore appropriate channels and strategies for addressing their concerns.
On alumni engagement, Professor Anyaehie encouraged the association to consider organising an alumni homecoming, noting that such initiatives could help strengthen relationships and mobilise support. He, however, emphasised the importance of having clear objectives and realistic expectations when engaging alumni.

The Vice-Chancellor also reflected on the challenges of bringing alumni together for national conventions, observing that the busy schedules of many alumni and the economic circumstances of those in Nigeria could make participation difficult.
He encouraged the association to proceed with its Health Week plans and assured the delegation that the University would consider areas in which it could offer support. He also expressed willingness to attend one of the activities, subject to his schedule.
As part of his support, Professor Anyaehie made a monetary donation to assist the delegation with transportation expenses between Abia State and Awka.He further indicated his intention to explore ways of addressing outstanding issues raised during the meeting.
The visit featured the presentation of gift items to the Vice-Chancellor in appreciation of his warm reception, advice and willingness to support the association.

Other members of the delegation included the Secretary-General, Chijioke Obinna Benjamin; Financial Secretary, John Miracle; Clerk of the House, Ekenjoku Favour; Honourable Member, Okorocha Solomon; Onubuogu Chinyere; and Obiozor Jennifer.
The engagement underscored the importance of alumni relations, mentorship and institutional collaboration in addressing medical students’ challenges and advancing their academic and professional development.
