The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, has lauded the former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku for his remarkable contributions to global diplomacy, Nigeria, and now, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Through the generous support of Chief Anyaoku and his distinguished network of friends, the university is witnessing the construction of gigantic structures, the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy.
Professor Arinze-Umobi highlighted the immense benefit this project brings to the university, noting the inclusion of a 1000-seating capacity auditorium, which will undoubtedly enhance the institution’s capacity for hosting international events, conferences, and academic gatherings. “This edifice will stand as a testament to the vision and influence of Chief Emeka Anyaoku, marking one of the most significant projects ever brought to our institution by a single individual,” she remarked. The Vice-Chancellor also expressed her satisfaction that this huge project will be completed and commissioned before the expiration of her tenure in January 2024, acknowledging the unprecedented pace at which the construction is progressing.
In her remark, Professor Arinze-Umobi emphasized the broader impact of the institute, which will not only elevate Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s standing but also serve as a beacon of academic excellence and diplomatic engagement in Nigeria and the world. She praised the director of the Institute, Professor Au Nonyelu, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the university’s development. “Professor Nonyelu’s innovative approach and relentless dedication are truly commendable. His ability to think outside the box and achieve remarkable results is a quality we deeply value in this University,” she stated.
The Vice-Chancellor further commended Professor Nonyelu for his integrity and accountability in overseeing the project, qualities that she believes are essential for such a transformative project. She expressed her gratitude for his role in ensuring the project’s success.
Professor Nonyelu, while welcoming the Acting Vice Chancellor spoke on the project’s significance, noting that it stands as one of the largest projects in any Nigerian university. He assured that the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy is on track for completion by the end of 2023, with a grand commissioning planned for January, coinciding with Chief Emeka Anyaoku’s birthday celebration. “We are fully committed to meeting our deadline, and with the dedication of everyone involved, it is indeed achievable,” he noted.
Prof Nnonyelu thanked the Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Arinze-Umobi for her visit to the project site and praised her for her exemplary leadership in maintaining peace and stability in the University since her appointment as Acting Vice Chancellor.
This project not only affirms Chief Emeka Anyaoku’s legacy as a global statesman but also positions Nnamdi Azikiwe University as a pivotal center for international studies and diplomacy, benefiting Nigeria and the global academic community.
