Anambra Assembly Speaker Commends UNIZIK's Renewed Stability as Vice-Chancellor Reaffirms Commitment to Merit and Institutional Reforms
The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, on Wednesday received the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, on a courtesy visit, during which both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration for the continued growth and development of the University.
Speaking during the visit, Rt. Hon. Udeze congratulated Prof. Anyaehie on his appointment and applauded his administration for restoring peace, stability and confidence within the University community.
The Speaker explained that the visit was in keeping with the tradition of maintaining a strong relationship between the Anambra State House of Assembly and the University. Despite the Assembly's demanding legislative schedule and annual recess, he said it was important to formally engage the Vice-Chancellor on matters of mutual interest.
He observed that the University had undergone remarkable positive changes since Prof. Anyaehie assumed office.
"As of last year, many people were concerned about the situation in this institution. Today, there is visible calm and renewed confidence. Even as I drove into the campus this morning, I could clearly see the difference," the Speaker remarked.
Rt. Hon. Udeze further assured the University of the continued support of the Anambra State House of Assembly through legislative collaboration, including the review of relevant laws where necessary to facilitate the institution's progress. He also encouraged the University Management to sustain regular engagement with the Assembly by providing updates on its academic programmes, research activities and developmental initiatives.
In his response, Prof. Anyaehie expressed profound appreciation to the Speaker and members of the Anambra State House of Assembly for their unwavering support and goodwill towards the University. He noted that the cordial relationship between the Legislature and UNIZIK would continue to foster academic excellence, good governance and sustainable institutional development.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, merit and institutional reforms, stressing that every policy and decision under his leadership would always be guided by the overall interest of the University.
Addressing concerns relating to irregular employment, Prof. Anyaehie explained that many affected workers were victims of unlawful recruitment carried out before the inception of his administration. He disclosed that the University has continued to engage relevant authorities to secure employment waivers while ensuring that available opportunities are allocated strictly in line with approved guidelines and the institution's manpower requirements.
He further stated that his administration is deliberately addressing staff imbalances across faculties and departments by prioritising critical academic areas with manpower shortages, while maintaining due process in recruitment, appointments and promotions.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that admissions, employment and all administrative processes would continue to be guided strictly by merit, fairness and established regulations, irrespective of external pressures.
The Speaker was accompanied by Hon. JohnBosco Akaegbobi, Minority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly and member representing Nnewi South II Constituency.
