A Nigerian Perspective on the Effect of COVID-19 Restrictions on Exile-Generated Counter Narratives

Abstract:

Political exiles provide counter narratives to members of repressed and censored societies. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19, countries have restricted the movement of persons across international borders. This paper examines the effects of corona virus restrictions on the ability to successfully seek asylum and consequently, the contribution of exiles to the supply of counter narratives a midst censorship. It is concluded that it is necessary for States and international bodies to facilitate the movement of asylum seekers as an exception to COVID-19 restrictions. A combination of international institution-assisted migration and the principle of non-refoulement will increase the possibility of successful migration for asylum seekers.
