COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

PSY 101                Introduction to Psychology I                          2 Credits              

The Science of psychology and its origin. The subject matter of psychology-behaviour motivation, emotion, frustration, conflict, defense mechanisms, etc schools of Psychology, different areas of psychology. Relationship between psychology and other disciplines.

 

PSY 102                Introduction to Psychology II                         2 Credits

Preliminary survey of topics in sensory processes and perception. Personality differences, psychological bases for behaviour. Types of behavioural abnormality and some areas of applied psychology; industrial, clinical, educational etc.

 

PSY 103                History and Systems of Psychology              2 Credits

Philosophical antecedent of psychology, Wilhelm Wundt, Weber, Fechner, Muller etc. Structuralism, Functionalism. Gestalt, etc. Survey of the origin of modern psychology with emphasis on the African influence on modern experimental psychology.

 

PSY 111                Quantitative Methods in Psychology I         2 Credits

Application of quantitative methods in psychological research, frequency distribution, plots – histograms, frequency Polygon, charts etc. measures of central tendencies– (mean, mode, and median.) Measure of dispersion -Standard deviation etc. standard scores as measures of comparison.

 

PSY 112                Quantitative Methods in Psychology II                        2 Credits

Normal and abnormal curves, areas under the normal curve. Probability theories, permutation and combinations. Introduction to parametric and non-parametric methods of data analysis in psychological investigations.

PSY 121                Basic Concepts in Experimental Psychology             2 Credits

Historical antecedents of experimental psychology, samples and sampling techniques; variables and control of variables in experimental design, discrete and continuous variables dependent and independent variables, quantitative and qualitative variables, experimental and control groups.

Observation, hypothesis testing, design of experiments (one way design, correlation design, etc) statistical analysis – descriptive and inferential statistics, research report.

Relationship between the psychological senses and behaviour. Animals experiments in the human body and their relationships to behaviour. Human position on the phylogenetic scale.

An introduction to the experimental analysis of learning process in both man and animals. Definition and explanation of types of learning, learning theories – SR and Cognitive theories, factors affecting learning, transfer of learning, motivation in learning.

The memory system remembering and forgetting, learning concepts, recall recognition. The learning theories.

 

PSY 201 Determinants of Behaviour                            2 Credits

Cause-effect approach to behaviour, S-R relationships, etc nature- Nature controversies as determinants of behaviour, motivational and social learning theories of behaviour, etc.

 

PSY 211 Introduction to Statistics for the Social Science I                     2 Credits

Definitions of basic statistical concepts: samples, population, parameters, estimates, variable, etc. descriptive statistics: frequency distributions and graphic representations, central tendencies, dispersions, probability and binomial, distribution, Normal curve.

 

PSY 212 Introduction to Statistics for the Social Science II  2 Credits

Correlations and regressions analysis, chi square analysis. The t- test, One-way and two way ANOVA statistics and their non-parametric equivalents.

 

PSY 221                General Experimental psychology I             2 Credits

Designed to train students to do experimental psychological   research, psychophysical concept and measurements. Issues of design, running an experiment, empirical approach involving psychological mechanisms in learning, thinking and perception. Experimental research reports.

 

PSY 222                General Experimental Psychology II           2 Credits

Analysis of some experimental studies in emotion, motivation and language. Time and perceptual illusions. Threshold and scaling methods.

 

PSY 223 Experimental Design                                                       2 Credits

Types of research design and when to use them. Factors, randomization, number of groups and type of control as determinants of experimental designs, independent, dependent and extraneous variables. Statistical correlates of experimental designs. One factor and higher order factorial designs.

 

PSY 231 Physiological psychology I                                            2 Credits

The internal environment of the cell as the unit of life, the endocrine system, basic neuro-anatomy – the nervous system, structure and functions of the neurons, the receptors and effectors the response mechanisms of human beings; specific sensory experience.

 

PSY 232                Physiological Psychology II                           2 Credits

The role of the genes and the evolutionary process in behaviour. The metabolic process, endocrinology (endocrine glands and hormones, physiological homeostasis). Relationship between the above process and behaviour (both normal and abnormal behaviours).

 

PSY 241                Developmental Psychology I                          2 Credits

Survey of theory and research on the developing child through life span. Prenatal development and hazards of pregnancy and delivery. Pre-maturity, components of human development (growth, maturation and learning). Principles of human development from infancy to early adolescence emphasizing specific aspects of development e.g. language, cognitive and physical aspects; early socialization in the home and school.

 

PSY 242 Developmental psychology II                        2 Credits

Adolescent stages of development. Survey of Freud, Piaget Erickson. Biological and behavioural theories from infancy to adolescence through adulthood, middle age and old age. Intellectual and personality characteristics of aging. Bereavement and death.

 

PSY 239 Personality and Adjustment                                           2 Credits

Psychoanalytic approach to personality. Trait theories of personality. Social learning theories. Humanistic theories, critical implication.

 

PSY 251 Psychology of Criminology                                           2 Credits

Psychological examination of crime and delinquency as social phenomena; review of the various theories of crime causation, impact of social forces on the creation of criminal law; the relationship between crime and social change; penology in Nigeria.

 

PSY 252 Psychology of ethnicity ad Ethnic Groups relations                2 Credits

Methods, problems and empirical data on psychology in the area of ethnicity, race and culture and their relation to personality. Survey of ethnicity including the positive and negative aspects of ethnicity; inter-ethnic prejudices and attribution pattern with special emphasis on ethnic groups in Nigeria. Ethnic stereotypes and conflicts. Reducing ethnic prejudice and group conflicts.

 

PSY 253 Introduction to Social Psychology                               2 Credits

Survey of social psychological concepts. Analysis of the social and psychological antecedents of modern social psychology. Social psychology and other social sciences. Methods of research in social psychology; attitudes (formation, characteristics and change). Leadership, social attribution of responsibility, introduction of group processes. Balance theories.

PSY 254 Belief System and Behaviour                                        2 Credits

Types, structure and functions of culture in social dynamics and how they affect behaviour. The influence of racism, ethicist, religion, political groups, etc. on behaviour.

 

 

PSY 261 Industrial psychology                                                      2 Credits

Psychology applied to business and industry. History and scope of industrial/occupational psychology; individual differences within the context of industrial activities vocational guidance and theories, personnel activities-selection, training and placement; personnel interviewing etc.

 

PSY 262 Sports Psychology                                                            2 Credits

Relationships between types of sporting activities and behaviour, recreation, stress management, aggression, co-operations as forms of sporting activities. The roles of self-image and motivation in sports performance. Review of current studies on psychology of sports.

 

PSY  265 Psychology of Industrial Relations                             2 Credits

Definition of key concepts in Industrial Relations; history of industrial relations in Nigeria; the psychological contract and  its implications for employer – labour relations.  Causes of industrial conflict and the various methods of resolution; collective bargaining and methods used by labour organizations in achieving their objectives..

 

PSY 281 Psychology of individual Differences                         2 Credits

Survey of types of individual differences in various aspects of behaviour and the effects of society and culture on individual behaviour, in-depth examination of intellectual and cognitive differences; study of personality and various theories of personality. The use of tests in the measurement of individual differences.

 

PSY 311 Statistical Methods in Psychology I                             2 Credits

Inferential statistical techniques; hypothesis testing with parametric statistics- person moment correlation, t-test ( Independent and matched), one way ANCOVA and post hoc pairwise comparism of means. Introduction to ANCOVA and higher order factorial statistics.

 

PSY 312 Statistical Methods in Psychology I                            2 Credits

Advanced statistical methods as applied to psychology including parametric linea regression and non parametric tests of significance -chi square (Goodness-of-fit and contingency table), Mann Whitney u test, Wilcoxon sign test, Spearman rank order correlation, and Kruskal Wallis test.

 

PSY 324 Advanced Experimental Psychology                           2 Credits

Elementary displays and reaction speed, perceptual-motor learning and performance Animal learning transfer, forgetting and problems solving.

 

PSY 331 Sensory Processes                                                             2 Credits

Types of sensory. Signal detection. Physical basis of sensation. Relationship between sensation and perception. Emphasis on human, visual, somatic senses and psychophysics practical.

 

PSY 341 Personality Assessments

Meaning and dimensions of personality. How is personality developed, what are measurable in Personality.  Assessment techniques and paradigms, personality dichotomies; Use of personality assessment paradigms like E.P.O MMPI the Big Five etc to relate personality to normal and abnormal behavior.

 

PSY 488 Health Psychology

Health and disease interplay of psychological physiological and environmental factors in the determinations of health status, stress, burn out and other psychological states that complicate physical ill health conditions.  The place of psychology in General Hospital and Maternity settings.

 

PSY 355 Political psychology                                                         2 Credits

Personality, attitudes, beliefs, social perception and attribution patterns as basic psychological constructs which influence political behaviour. Major approaches in the formation and maintenance of political beliefs and activities: socialization, authoritarianism and alienation. Leadership conflict, aggression, violence, revolution, war, African regional politics and international relations. Ethnic politics in Nigeria.

 

PSY 354 Advanced Experimental Psychology                           2 Credits

Elementary displays and reaction speed- perceptual motor learning and performance. Animal learning transfer, forgetting and problem solving.

 

PSY 351 Advanced Social Psychology                         2 Credits

Values, attitudes and Nigerian development interpersonal/social perception. Interpersonal attraction. Attribution theories and attribution processes. Social structure: goals, power, communication, etc. attitude measurement and attitude change. Aggression and its management, group decisions, performance and leadership effectiveness. Sex roles and sex differences: cross-cultural analysis. Achievement motivation. The social psychology of institutions: religion, family, school, etc.

 

PSY 356 Environmental psychology                            2 Credits

Mans interaction with his physical environment and its impact on human behaviour perception of man-made habit. Methods of environmental assessment, man as a part of ecological-behavioural, critical assessment of Roger Barber’s contribution to environmental psychology.

 

PSY 361 Organizational psychology                            2 Credits

Man within a wide organizational setting. Topics include: concept of power and authority, formal and informal groups; group conflicts in organization and their resolutions; industrial leadership theories of industrial motivation; human problems to technological change communication systems.

 

 

PSY 363 Personnel management                                   2 Credits

Introducing students to personnel management regarding the history and development of the personnel function of management; job analysis; quality of personnel, human resource planning work forces analysis. Recruitment and selection; performance appraisal, training policies and administration: personnel development; job evaluation; salary and wage policies and working condition. Cases drawn from the Nigerian environment will be used to reinforce learning and understanding of the subject matters.

 

PSY 371: Clinical Psychology                                        2 Credits

Foundations of Clinical Psychology, differential diagnosis treatment.  The role of the clinical psychologist in community mental health delivery.  The concept of normality and abnormality Neuroses, personality disorder and delinquency.  Psychoses functional and Organic.  Assessment of mental disorder.

 

PSY 372 Clinical Psychology II                                     2 Credits

Integrative study of the nature and methods of clinical psychology. Psychological dysfunction and their management. Mental deficiency and retardation. Training of mental retardates; educational. Vocational and social.

 

PSY 373 Counseling Psychology                                   2 Credits

Meaning and explanation of counseling psychology. Types of counseling; misconceptions about counseling in Nigeria. Counselor qualities; individual and group counseling; the need for preventive counseling in Nigeria. Counselor theories, e.g. client-centered approach, rational-emotive therapy (RET), Decision making Approach, Behavioural approach, etc. career choice and information.

 

PSY 375 Psychology of Substance Abuse                    2 Credits

Diagnosis of drug and alcohol abuse. Treatment and rehabilitation. Psychological problems associated with substance abuse. Basic aspects of the pharmacology of psychotropic drugs. Drugs of addiction and abuse-alcohol, the opiates, synthetic analgesics and morphine-like drugs, barbiturates, cocaine, cannabis-sativa (marijuana), psycho-stimulants (amphetamines), Hallucinogens, tobacco, etc. stages of alcohol dependence. Rehabilitation, Drug legislation and social action. Practical lessons.

 

PSY 377 Managerial Psychology

Insight into Management/decision making processes, psychological factors that influence management decisions.  Work and organizations in Modern Industrial settings.  Individual, and team behavior in work settings. Development of managerial skills.

 

378 Career Development 

Meaning of Career development stages of development/steps/evolution of preferred future.  Knowledge, skills, experience and other psychological factors that enhance the creation of a meaningful life.  Students should be able to understand how to choose the best career or assists one do that; putting in perspective the foregoing variables.

 

PSY 384 Cross-cultural Psychology                                             2 Credits

Scope, method and limitation of cross-cultural studies of behaviour. Cross-cultural studies of behaviour with special emphasis on studies in Africa an Asia.

 

PSY 381 Forensic Psychology                                                        2 Credits

Introduction to forensic psychology, definition and scope; art identification if incidence; integrations and confessions using psychological skills; interviewing techniques. Crime and delinquency, psychopathic behaviours and society, juvenile offender and the law, mental status of the offenders, social psychological implications of legal judgment; crime culture and prevention; mental health legislation.

 

PSY 382 Demography                                                                      2 Credits

The course is designed to equip students with principles of demography and population studies. Areas to be covered include: demographic data, basic concepts and techniques as tools pf demography and population studies as well as the relationship between them. The controversial debates in theory and policy concerning the nature of the interaction between population and socio-economic development will be examined.

Psychological views of formation of diverse religion. Religion, human needs, and social functions. The relationship between religions and founders’ personality characteristics. The functional roles of religions in personality adjustment and maintenance of social order.

 

PSY 388 Principles of Educational psychology         2 Credits

The nature and scope of education in the African concept. Problems of educating the African child. The home environment, the school and wider community. Emphasis on teacher education, the role of parents and cousins, making education more relevant and more meaningful.

 

PSY 391 Research Methods in Psychology I                               2 Credits

Review of experimental designs and statistical analysis employed in psychological research. Discussion of steps involved in the presentation of research reports. Test construction, validity and reliability of psychological tests. Three-group and n-factorial research designs and appropriate statistical tests (parametric and nonparametric). Emphasis on practical research experience and presentations in professional journals. Ethical issues.

 

PSY 392: Research Methods in Psychology II                            2 Credits

Analysis of research methodologies involved in-group dynamic e.g. Asch’s conformity experiments, risky shifts, Zimbardo et al (1973) simulated prisons study, etc.) Critical analysis of some social studies done in Africa and their cross-cultural implications. Nature-nature issues in personality, aggression, pro-social behaviour, etc.

 

PSY 431 Psycho-biological study of Behaviour I                      2 Credits

An examination of the Physiology of chemical, auditory, visual, and somatic senses, and their relationship with Psychological processes. Structure and functions of the brain, autonomic nervous system, and the glands. Biological factors in motivation; instinctual behaviours and emotion. The biology of sexual behaviour, sleep and arousal.

 

PSY 432  Psycho-Biological Study of Behaviour II

Biological factors in motivation: instinctual behaviours and emotion.  The biology of sexual behavior: sleep and arousal. Advanced treatment of issues in PSY 431 including the complex nature of central nervous systems and behavior, Principles of psychopharmacology in uniting neuro transmitter and their relationship with psychotropic substance.

The person in social perception. The nature of cognition. Perception of causality. Intra and inter-group perception; biases in perception; inter-group prejudice and conflict. Inference process and forming impression of others. Theories and attribution biases. Implications of social perception and attribution biases. Implications of social perception and attribution for inter-group relations in Nigeria.

 

PSY 453 Psychology of Social Change                                        2 Credits

Social psychological analysis of the concept of social change invocations and resistance; tradition Vs modernity; dynamics of peasant cultures; studies of pre-literate societies; adjustment problems to social change; conflicts and crises of identity.

 

PSY 461  Psychologies of Union Management Relations         2 Credits

Practical instruction in psychotherapeutic intervention techniques. Supervised experience. Practical work in psychotherapy. Application of the theories in laboratory and field situations.

 

PSY 472 Practicum in Psychotherapy II                     2 Credits

More detailed studies and practical approaches to identification and treatment of behaviours disorders a continuation of PSY 471.

 

PSY 473 Behaviour Modification                                2 Credits

Approaches to understanding the principles and applications of conditioning to adaptive and mal-adaptive behaviours. Topics include: modification of respondent behaviour-implosion and desensitization, reinforcement and aversive stimuli. A review of research and case histories. Integration of relevant methodologies and techniques.

PSY 481 Current Issues in psychology                         2 Credits

The context of this course may change from year to year depending on changing focus of research and conceptualization in psychology. The courses will be based on a survey of psychological literature as depicted in the Annual Review of psychology. The areas proposed to be covered include: clinical psychology, organizational psychology, personality, social and developmental psychology.

 

PSY 482 Consumer Psychology                                     2 Credits

History of consumer psychology. Role of motivation, perception and learning in determining consumer behaviour, decision-making models adopted by consumers in their choice behaviour. Exchange theory. Some research methodologies undertaken in consumer and making studies survey methods, interviews, projective techniques etc. influence of advertising on choice behaviour-print and electronic media. Ethical issues.

 

PSY 484 Military Psychology                                                        2 Credits

The social psychology of leadership styles, communications and intelligence network persuasion and indoctrination psychological implications of military involvement in African politics.

 

PSY 485 Psychology of Vocational Behaviour                          2 Credits

Theoretical and empirical analysis of factors influencing vocational and career choice. Topics include: psychological and social determinants of vocational choice; dynamics of job entry; vocational success, career ladder and effects of technological advances in jobs and workers.

 

PSY 486 Community Psychology                                                    2 Credits

The structures and functions of social groups e.g. co-operative societies, age grades, clubs, etc. cohesiveness of communities as a function of interests and goals. Leadership structures prejudice and conflict within and between communities.

 

PSY 487 Psychology of Social media

People interact with the world around them largely through mediated means, eg. Internet, television, radio, etc.  This course will survey current social media e.g, Facebook, twitter, youtube, whattup, etc and popular culture in order to highlight the psychological processes at play.  Topicswill include: Social belonging, interpersonal attraction, identity bias, and cyber bullying.  Students will be expected to learn how to study social media and popular culture using psychological methods.

 

PSY 491 psychological Testing and Test Construction I                        2 Credits

Different types of tests; test construction, standardization with reference to deficiencies in the provision of local needs. Issues of reliability, validity and usability of tests. Other issues in psychological assessment techniques.

 

PSY 492 Psychological Testing and Test Construction II                       2 Credits

Advanced theoretical and practical orientation in test construction, standardization and validation.

 

PSY 499 Research Project                                               6 Credits

Research report which involves experimentation or a survey or clinical report to be undertaken by individual students under the supervision of an academic staff.
