Big boost for medical education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The Council Chambers of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka erupted in joy and jubilation on Tuesday evening , September 23, 2006 at exactly 6.11pm when the Deputy Registrar Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) , Dr Nnaemeka Uchenna Nwakamma announced the increase of admission quota for medical students of the university from 100 to 300.

Dr Nwakamma led the 19-member team on re-accreditation and accreditation of programmes for the medical school and dentistry programme of the university who were on a 2-day working visit to the university.

Following an extensive rigorous accreditation visit, to the College of Health Sciences, Nnewi, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) team evaluated the institition’s upgraded infrastructure, state-of the-art simulation equipment, expanded clinical training facilities and faculty strength.

 Receiving the report at the university's council chamber, the Vice-Chancellor restated his resolve to prioritise students' needs. He highlighted his administration's efforts to improve the training of medical and dental students through the construction of classrooms, hostel blocks, and staff offices, as well as the provision of teaching and practical learning materials.

Prof. Anyaehie informed the team of his administration's bold steps in signing contracts for the construction of a new provost's office, a new library complex, and a 500-seat capacity auditorium.

He also spoke of his administration's desire to relocate the College of Medicine to its permanent site at Akamili, and of plans to use internally generated revenue to fund the construction of a 50-bedroom hostel expected to be completed next year.

He further acknowledged the support of private donors, such as Roban Stores, in building a hostel at the College of Medicine.

Earlier, in his report, the team lead, Dr. Nwakanma, commended the university management for the warm hospitality extended to the team since their arrival on Sunday, 20th September 2026. He explained that the team's mission was largely advisory in nature, and gave a rundown of the faculties and departments assessed, including restorative dentistry, oral surgery, oral pathology, oral medicine, and child dental health in the Faculty of Dentistry; the Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital; and, at the College of Medicine, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical microbiology, chemical pathology, histopathology, and community medicine.

The team called on the university management to recruit more qualified medical staff, maintain efficient medical records, create adequate office spaces, procure furniture, provide a multipurpose laboratory, establish animal-holding facilities, provide an adequate water supply, provide more dental chairs, create five departments within the School of Dentistry, provide post-mortem facilities, store reagents in an air-conditioned room, install phantom heads, and provide shelf cabinets, sandbags, and fire extinguishers.

Noting that the hospital serves as the workshop for training students, the team urged the Vice-Chancellor to continue supporting it, and promised to monitor the university's progress in addressing the identified gaps before their next visit. A notable outcome of the exercise was the increase in the university's admission quota for medical students, from 100 to 300.

In his vote of thanks, Dr. Olabode Ijarogbe of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), commended the university management for the warm reception. He further commended the leadership qualities of the team lead, Dr. Nwakanma, Deputy Registrar of MDCN.

Also present were a former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the UNIZIK Governing Council, Prof. Suleman Kuranga; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Alex Asigbo; the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. JKC Emejulu; the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Angela Ufele-Obiese; and the University  Director, Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Comrade Emeka A. Attah.

With this positive development, there are hopes that more students can now be admitted into the university’s medical school. It also underscores the commitment of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie , a renowned Professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurements who had served as Provost of a Medical College before now, to ensure that UNIZIK is positioned as the leading institution in Nigeria where teaching,  training, research and innovation takes premium space.
