THRILLING NOVELTY FOOTBALL MATCH

NAUWA Awka Campus Triumphs Over Nnewi in Thrilling Novelty Match

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Women Association (NAUWA) has strengthened the bonds of friendship, unity and healthy living among its members through a novelty football match between the Awka and Nnewi Campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK).

The novelty match, which was held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the University, featured members of NAUWA from both campuses in a keenly contested encounter.

The match lived up to its billing as both teams displayed remarkable determination, skill and competitive spirit. Despite several attempts by both sides, neither team was able to break the deadlock as the regulation first nor second halves ended goalless.

With the match destined to be decided by penalty kicks, the Awka Campus team demonstrated greater composure, converting three of its spot-kicks to emerge victorious by 3–0.

The victory earned the Awka Campus team the first prize, while the Nnewi Campus team took home the second prize. Both teams were commended for their sportsmanship, enthusiasm and commitment to the spirit of unity which characterised the event.

The organisers also expressed special appreciation to the coach of the Awka Campus team for his dedication and efforts in preparing the team for the competition.

President NAUWA, Prof. Nkechinyere Nwokoye in a remark after the match commended the Awka campus ladies for their sacrifices in the course of their training, and to Prof J. C. Onyejiaka (Senator) who coached them for a number of days.

“To Nnewi campus members, I appreciate your doggedness throughout the match. You won Agulu campus last year, and Awka campus members took the trophy from you today. In fact, we all won. It is a win-win match.

“I appreciate our dear Vice Chancellor, Prof Bond Anyaehie, for encouraging us as his daughters to keep fit in order to be productive in our various offices. Thanks to all who supported us in one way or another” she stated.

The successful outing ended on a celebratory note, with both teams receiving commendation for making the event memorable and further strengthening the bonds between the Awka and Nnewi Campuses.

The novelty match is part of NAUWA's efforts to promote camaraderie, physical fitness, wellness and stronger relationships among female staff of the University across its campuses.

The initiative also aligns with the vision of the University Management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, which places emphasis on staff welfare, healthy living, unity and a vibrant University community.
