  • Welcome to department of PARASITOLOGY AND ENTOMOLOGY

The Parasitology and Entomology discipline is unique because it provides a focus for convergence of technologies. Its uniqueness naturally defines its role and dictates its increasing relevance in several disciplines and modern practices and techniques. The scope of application of Parasitology and Entomology in the modern scientific and technological context is, therefore, infinitely wide. Students are equipped in the Department and are thus encouraged to function, research and engage in collaborative projects in wide professional contexts.

    : . HISTORY

Programme in Parasitology and Entomology started in 1982 in the Anambra State University of
Technology (ASUTECH) under the Department of Applied Biology and in the Faculty of Applied
Biological Sciences, with the following areas of Specialization in the Year Three: Parasitology,
Entomology, Fisheries, and Plant Pathology/ Crop Protection. During the 1985/86 Session, the Departments of Parasitology and Entomology, Plant Pathology/ Crop Protection (re-named Department of Horticulture and Plant Protection) were carved out from the original Department of Applied Biology, taking along with them the specialization areas of Parasitology and Entomology, Plant Pathology/ Crop Protection respectively. Thus, giving three departments all under the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences. The Department of Horticulture and Plant Protection was later moved to the Faculty of Agriculture in the Then College of Agricultural Sciences at Abakaliki (now within Ebonyi State University).

The new Department of Parasitology and Entomology produced her first batch of graduates in 1989. In 1989, the University, faced with the problem of reducing both cost and the number of faculties following the State rationalization exercise on reduction of number of departments and faculties, the Department of Applied Biology and Parasitology and Entomology were emerged. This merger gave rise to the department of Parasitology/ Applied Biology which offered Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree with options in Parasitology and Entomology and Applied Biology.

Following the creation of Anambra State in 1991, ASUTECH was renamed Nnamdi Azikiwe University. This was followed with some re-organizations. The Department of Parasitology and Entomology/Applied Biology became known as the Department of Biological Sciences which offered degree options in Parasitology and Entomology, Zoology, and Botany.

Again following the Federal Government take-over of the University in 1992 and coupled with the high level of subscription for admission there was the need for demerger of the options. In 2000/2001 Session, there was a demerger which gave rise to three independent departments: Department of Parasitology and Entomology, Department of Zoology, and Department of Botany. The first batch of students from the Department of Parasitology and Entomology, after this demerging, graduated in 2003/2004 Session.

The following Academic Programmes are currently being offered in the Department: B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Diploma in Pest Management, PGD Public Health Parasitology, PGD Pest Management, M.Sc. Public Health Parasitology, M.Sc. Pest Management, Ph.D Public Health Parasitology, and Ph.D Pest Management. Post-Graduate Programme in the Department started in 1984. The first batch of M.Sc. students in the Department, completed their work and were examined and awarded M.Sc. in 1987. The first Ph.D student in the Department graduated in 1998. Post-graduate Programme admission in the Department has increased from about 4 students in 1984 to 400 in 2009/2010 Session.

To train graduates with scientific understanding of the way parasites, vectors, intermediate and definitive host exists, interact, and behave including their ecological and physiological requirements, and their reactions to environmental changes under natural and laboratory conditions. Graduates are trained to acquire broad knowledge in various types of human and animal diseases and pest management methods, principles and practice of environmental sanitation and hygiene, health education and advocacy. Graduates of this program will serve as major sources of manpower for the livestock, industrial, health, research and educational establishments, government ministries and international organizations.
