    You are welcome to the Department of Animal Science and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra, Nigeria. Here we offer undergraduate and graduate programmes on Animal Production and Management, Animal Breeding and Genetics/ Biotechnology, Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry, and Animal Physiology and Biotechnology. Our research programmes ranges from understanding of animal biology to improvement of traditional livestock resources. We address parochial and global issue

    ANIMAL SCIENCE AND PRODUCTION


    The department started in 2010 after the resource verification by the National Universities Commission. The pioneer student (24 students) were admitted in the 2011/2012 session. As at 2014/2015 academic year, the students population has risen to two hundred given an average of fifty (50) students per academic year.

    Mission

    To facilitate scientific research and technology transfer for efficient and sustainable production of high quality animal products with optimal animal well-being; enhancement of the human diet; advancement of sound environmental practices, and provision of leadership and inspiration in educating individuals for participation and effective response to challenges facing the global animal industries.

    Vision

    Our vision is to be the pace setter for the citizens of Nigeria and beyond for knowledge in all aspects of Animal Science and Technology. We wish to achieve scientific pre-eminence in the selected areas, and be able to develop teams to find and solve real problems in animal biotechnology, breeding, husbandry, nutrition and reproductive physiology in a real world; OBJECTIVE

    Objectives
    1. Inculcating in students the spirit of entrepreneurship and self-reliance through livestock farming, processing and or marketing of poultry and livestock products (value chain).
    2. Contributing to the production of raw materials to support the growth of several industries.
    3. Enhancing the production and processing of livestock and its products cum value chain as export products.
    4. Providing consultancy services to rural livestock farmers, governments (local, state and national) and corporate organizations on livestock issues.
    5. Inculcating in students the knowledge of animal waste management, bioremediation and production of alternative energy resources using wastes. Hence, creating wealth out of nothing.

         6. Training subject matter specialists (M. Sc. and PhD candidates) in various areas of Animal Science 

              and Technology.

    Admission Requirements
    Undergraduate

    For UME entry candidates (5 years program) The UME subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science or Animal Production. To be admitted into the 5 years program of B. Agriculture (Animal Science and Technology), candidates must have credit passes in 5 WAEC/GCE/NECO subjects to include English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology/Agriculture Science. Pass in Mathematics, may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. The 5 credits must be obtained in not more two sittings. The credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology For Direct entry (4 years program) Direct entry candidates must possess an HSC or GCE A/L in any of the following: Biology, Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science and at least 5 credits at WAEC, GCE or NECO at O level. Candidates with HD/HND/NCE in Agricultural disciplines are also eligible for direct entry admission. Candidates for the four year program will be admitted into the 200 level.
