    The building discipline is unique because it provides a focus for convergence of technologies. Its uniqueness naturally defines its role and dictates its increasing relevance in several disciplines and modern practices and techniques. The scope of application of building in the modern scientific and technological context is, therefore, infinitely wide. Students are equipped in the Department and are thus encouraged to function, research and engage in collaborative projects in wide professional contexts.

    Mission

    The mission of the Department is to use teaching, research and community service to solve societal problems and how to make built environment technologically independent and break new ground in all aspects of the built environment. It is hoped that the graduates will be able to use their knowledge to address the societal problems in the area of building sciences, technology and management.

    Vision

    Our vision is to be the preferred provider of professional and career-oriented research in the science, technology and management of built environment.

    Objectives
    Objectives: These include among others to enable us: Produce professionally trained high level managers, meeting the needs of construction industry, government establishments and institutions of higher learning; Conduct research into all aspect of the construction processes including productivity relationship of man-machine, processing and handling of materials, selection and utilization of construction equipment, applications of planning and scheduling techniques, and development of managerial information systems, quality control in construction products and techniques for project cost control and monitoring; Acquire sufficient and relevant academic and technical knowledge and skill for dealing with the problems of construction processes and Procedures; Learn to work as a team to achieve solution to multidisciplinary problem of the industry as quality of construction product is a shared commitment; Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to manage scarce construction resources, enhancing the experiences of practicing managers and professionals by upgrading their knowledge of modern management theories and techniques, and keeping abreast of the current trends in the global construction field; and To produce graduates with the skills in managing a construction company or Department, organizing, direct its marketing, financing, estimating, personal procurement, quality control and accounting functions.

    Admission Requirements
    Undergraduate

    (a) Normal Admission: Admission to Building Programme can be classified into normal admission into 100 level for holders of SSSCE or equivalent. To be eligible, candidates must have 5 credit passes at SSSCE or equivalent in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and any two subjects from Building Construction, Land Surveying, Fine Arts, Technical Drawing, Economics, Geography, Chemistry and Biology. (b) Special Admission: Holders of HSC, GCE A/L, OND and NCE in appropriate discipline would be admitted to the 200 level of the programme. Any deficiencies in candidates’ background should be rectified by taking appropriate courses.

    Postgraduate

    Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) The Postgraduate Diploma enables candidates coming from other disciplines or having qualification below the minimum specified for the Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme to qualify for the M.Sc. programme. These include Higher National Diploma (HND) holders in construction related disciplines or its equivalent. Industry based practicing managers/professionals of long standing experience, who have adequate ability and motivation and who additionally must be corporate members of the relevant professional institutions – NIQS, NIOB, NIA, NSE and NIESV etc. will be considered on its merit and individual cases. 5.2 Master’s Degree Programme (MSc) Holder of Postgraduate Diploma in construction management from recognized institutions who score a CGPA of not less than 3.00 (5.00 point scale) or a credit level pass. Graduate of Building, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Estate Management and Surveying holding an honours degree with a CGPA of not below 3.0 (5.0 point scale) Applicant must satisfy the University Regulation for registration for Higher Degree. 5.3 Doctor of Philosophy Programme (PhD) Meet the admission requirements of the school of Post Graduate Studies and those of the Ph.D. Supervision Committee of the Department of Building Complete successfully the prescribed programme of coursework as directed by the School of Post Graduate Studies. Conduct appropriate research in a chosen area within the framework of Construction Management, Technology and other relevant option. Present an acceptable Dissertation to the Department of Building and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences; Defend successfully in the oral examination, the dissertation. In addition to above, Ph.D. candidates should hold Master Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.5 (5.0 point scale) Candidates who hold other qualification acceptable to the University Senate may be considered.
