    Mission

    The Department of Estate Management is totally committed towards: The training and development of well-informed, self-confidents and disciplined graduates who appreciate the complexity of legal, economic, social and technological impacts on the utilization, development and management of land and the built environment not only within Nigeria but in any other society in the world. Consequent upon this, the curriculum comprises of both academic and practical exposures of the future graduates to the art and science of estate surveying and valuation (estate management) within the duration of the programme. Research and development of concepts, theories and solutions to problems of land use, valuation and appraisals as well as land administration and management in the ever expanding socio-economic, technological and political environments of our country and the world as a whole. Training and manpower development through short-term courses, workshops and seminars for stakeholders and civil servants in land use and land taxation administration for the states and local governments within the university catchment’s area.

    Philosophy and Fundamental Objectives

    Estate Management centres on the art and science of effective and efficient development and utilization of landed property, other efficient development and utilization of landed property, other natural resources and the built environment to sustain and enhance social and economic activities of man. Land is not only scarce in supply but also very indispensable to man. Hence, prudence warrants judicious development, use and management of the resources to secure optimum and sustainable returns there from. In pursuit of this philosophy, the estate management programme as herein contained is designed to equip the students to appreciate the complex legal, economic, social and technological impacts on the use, development and management of land and the built environment. The emerging world concern on technological development and environmental sustainability calls for the curriculum for education in estate management to be responsible to them.

     

    Main Aims of the Programme

    The specific objectives are:

    * To instill in students an appreciation of the complex nature of the relationship between man and his environment.

    * To involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.

    * To provide a broad and balanced foundation of the knowledge of land and buildings and their exploitation and use.

    * To develop in students the ability to apply their analytical skills to the solution of theoretical and practical land resource problems.

    * To develop in students entrepreneurial skills and value in self-employment in the profession.

    * To develop in the students survival skills in an ever changing economic, technological and political world.

    * To lay the foundation on which students can proceed to further studies in specialized aspects of estate surveying practice or multi-disciplinary areas involving estate surveying and valuation.

    * To create an appreciation of the importance of estate surveying and valuation in an industrial, environmental, economic and social context.

    * To develop the students in the use of information technology in the effective management of land and the environment.

     

    The programme as herein contained is geared towards training future graduates of Estate Management with the requisite academic and practical background for professional practice of estate surveying and valuation in both private and public sectors of the economy as well as further academic development. The thrusts of the programme are in the areas of real estate valuation and appraisals, plant and machinery valuation, landed property investment and facility management, feasibility and viability appraisals, land administration, land use planning and development, project management, among others.

     

    OBJECTIVES:

    The programmes are geared towards providing enabling environment for critical studies and research to enhance further development of the theories and practice of Estate Management discipline. Accomplishment of the structured course-work and supervised research embodied in the form of a long essay, thesis and/or dissertation report will lead to the award of a postgraduate diploma or degree in Estate Management

     

    The programmes aim at fulfilling the following specific objectives in the process:

    1. To equip the graduates better to appreciate and respond more effectively to the ever changing demands of the real estate investment markets’ and to the dynamics of political, socio-economic and technological environment.

    2.To position the graduates to understand the evolving contemporary real estate management techniques and appraisal methodologies and land use and administration approaches and their adaptation to our national economy.

    3. To train and develop appropriate manpower to sustain teaching and research in Estate Management in tertiary (Universities and Polytechnics) and research institutions.

    4. To provide avenue for allied professional who want to change their careers to estate surveying and valuation.

    5. To produce graduates who are theoretically and scientifically current and competent to make effective contributions towards the national economic development.

    Admission Requirements
    Undergraduate

    Postgraduate

    A. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) PROGRAMME The PGD Programme is a bridge programme. The following persons may apply for admission into the programme: (i) Graduates from approved universities who hold a minimum of Second Class Honours Degree in related disciplines. (ii) Graduates who hold Third Class Honours Degree in Estate Management who must have spent not less than five years in professional practice in a recognized firm. (iii) Graduates who hold Higher National Diploma (HND) in Estate Management with at least a credit pass or its equivalent from approved institutions. (iv) Holders of professional qualifications in Estate Management such as Professional Diploma, ANIVS, FNIVS or their equivalents. (v) In addition to any of the above, candidates seeking admission into the PGD programme must also possess the minimum entry requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree in the Department. B. MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) DEGREE PROGRAMME The following persons may apply for admission: (i) Graduates with a minimum of Second Class Honours Degree in Estate Management from approved universities. (ii) Holders of postgraduate diploma (PGD in Estate Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) or other approved Universities with Final Cumulative Grade Point Average (FCGPA) not less than 3.50 (on 5-point scale) or a credit pass. C. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) PROGRAMME The following persons may apply for admission: (i) Graduates from approved universities who possess Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Estate Management (in any of the Specialization Areas). (ii) In addition to (i) above, the candidate should have a Final Cumulative Grade Point Average (FCGPA) of not less than 3.50 on 5-point scale. (iii) Candidates from institutions other than UNIZIK may be required in addition to the above specified requirements to take additional courses as may be prescribed by the Department.
