    Medical Laboratory Science is a dynamic multi-disciplinary profession that encompasses the science of Chemical Pathology, Histopathology, Haematology and Blood transfusion, Immunology, Medical Bacteriology, Medical Parasitology, Medical Virology and Medical Mycology. It is designed to provide a broad based fundamental scientific knowledge and its application, such that the graduates are well equipped to meet with the challenges of modern scientific knowledge in Health Care.

    Lady Nancy had her basic training in Haematology and Blood Transfusion Sciences at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus. She also obtained an M. Sc and Ph. D from the institution in the same discipline. She is a professional medical laboratory scientist. She previously worked at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) where she attained the position of Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist before making a switch to the academia. She is also a trained malaria microscopist and has been involved in SuNMap-supported malariometry survey in Anambra State since 2008. She participates in the biannual drug therapeutic efficacy trial using ACTs combination therapy (AL, AA & DHP) in the treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Nigerian children in Enugu and Anambra states. It is a programme of National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP) under the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) Nigeria. She had attended many conferences and has scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals to her credit. Lady Nancy is a lay preacher in the Methodist Church. She is married to Prof. Christian Chibuzo Ibeh and the marriage is blessed with children.

    Objectives

    a. To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for the profession; an appreciation of its application in different contexts (in areas such as general medicine, food and beverages, pharmaceutical industries, utility Department e.g water corporations; research institutions etc.)

    b. To involve the students in an intellectually and satisfying experience of learning, studying and research.

    c. To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills; performing effectively in clinical diagnostic services, academics and quality assurance; and function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health team in the care of individuals and groups at all levels of health care.

    d. To develop in students, the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine.

    e. To develop in students through an education in Medical Laboratory Sciences, a range of transferable skills of value in medical and non-medical employment.

    f. To provide students with a knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas involving medical sciences.

    g. To generate in students, an appreciation of the importance of medical laboratory sciences in an industrial, economic, environmental, health and social context.

    h. To generate students with the ability to produce biological and diagnostic reagents as well as being able to fabricate and maintain laboratory equipment.

    i. To also empower graduates of Medical Laboratory Sciences with skills that will enable them engage in income yielding ventures i.e. a re-orientation from the take-a-job mentality to the make-a-job mentality.

    Admission Requirements
    Undergraduate

    Candidates seeking enrolment into the BMLS programme should possess the following minimum entry qualifications: 1. Candidates should possess at least 5 credits at ordinary level GCE or SSCE examination for at least not more than 2 sittings. The subjects include: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and English Language. The student must also have performed well in joint matriculation board examination (UME/JAMB). The university, if deemed necessary may conduct an additional examination. Preference shall be given to candidates with 5 credits at one sitting. 2. Direct entry: (i) Pass in general certificate of education or at advanced level in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Zoology) in addition to (1) above. (ii) Graduates of first degree in related sciences or its equivalent in addition to (1) one above (remedial result is not accepted). Such graduates with CGPA of 3.5 and above shall be deemed to be qualified. (iii) Candidates who have completed Part II examinations of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and who have relevant qualifications as specified in 1 above may be considered for direct entry.

    Postgraduate

    Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD)Programme: Holders of BMLS (Third Class), AIMLS, AMLSCN and B.Sc in any related science programme may be eligible to apply for admission into the programme. Candidates should also possess at least 5 credits at not more than 2 sittings in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and English Language. Master of Sciences (M.Sc) programme: Holders of BMLS (not below Second Class (Honours) Lower Division), FIMLS, FMLSCN and PGD (not below 3.0 FCGPA) in any area of specialty in Medical Laboratory Science may be eligible to apply for admission into the programme. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme: Holders of M.Sc. (not below 3.5 FCGPA) in any of the areas of specialty in Medical Laboratory Science may be eligible to apply for admission into the programme.
