  • Welcome to department of POLYMER AND TEXTILES ENGINEERING

The department of Polymer and textile Engineering is geared towards producing trained manpower for the Polymer and Textile industry. The programme is designed to ground the student in the specific profession area. The Textile industry is concerned with the conversion of fabrics into yarns , clothing fabrics , curtains , carpets and other furnishings used for domestic purposes , as well as fabrics used for industrial purposes. The Polymer industry on the other hand produces such items as paints, plastics,

    : . HISTORY

    POLYMER AND TEXTILES ENGINEERING

The Polymer and Textile Engineering (PTE) Department, Faculty of Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University,Awka came into existence as a part of the restructuring of the former Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) to meet an existing demand for polymer and textile specialists for the man power demand in the state in which the university is located.

The first set of students (24 in number) were admitted in the 2006/2007 academic session.

The Department intends to train students in an all round Polymer studies who would graduate as Polymer and Textile Engineers nurtured with sound knowledge of Polymer Science and Polymer Technology.

To contribute meaningfully to the growing industrialization of the state, the abundance of polymer products, the Department also has a focus on polymer utilization, polymer waste management/handling/recycling,biodegradable and conducting polymers.

Welcome to the Department of Polymer and Textile Engineering of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. We are the bedrock of modern engineering producing engineers that develop new materials with polymers and textiles to decorate and redesign the world to an easy and safer place to live in with unlimited possibilities. We run both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to the award of BEng, MEng or PhD with various specialisations. You are welcome to visit us at the Awka Campus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

    Mission

The Mission of Polymer and Textile Engineering Department is to produce disciplined and self-reliant graduates, who would be able to analyse the future of polymer and textile engineering, policy and market; establish and manage research and development projects and contribute substantial quota to the overall development of the Nigerian economy and the world’s technological development.

    Vision

The department hopes to make her students technically superior and ethically strong, and become the premier department engaging every student in high-impact educational experiences and ensuring that students graduate with 21st century skills.

    Objectives

The objectives of the Polymer and Textile Engineering programme include:

    a)          Training and production of graduates with the necessary skills to meet the demand for skilled manpower in the Polymer, Textile and allied industries, as well as the academia and the Nigerian socio-economic sector in general.

    b)          Production of graduates of engineering with the necessary skills and principles required for planning, design operations, management and maintenance of respective industrial plants.

    c)          Stimulation and motivation of the student for attainment of excellence through high achievement in the general engineering field through close affiliation with industry via the supervised Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as a training ground for exposure to contemporary problems and hands –on methods of solving them.

    d)          Preparation of students for a career in production, research and development and management with polymer manufacturing, man-made fibre units, textile plants, paint industry, research institutes, polytechnics and universities in the country.

    Admission Requirements
    Undergraduate

A candidate seeking admission into the department of Polymer and Textile Engineering may be admitted either into the five-year programme or into the four-year programme. (a) Five –year Programme Candidates seeking admission into the first year programme of the department must have five credits in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or equivalent obtained in not more than two sittings. The subjects passed at credit level must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition, candidates who satisfy the requirements above may be admitted into the department after passing University Matriculation Examination (UME) and/or the Pre-Science Examination. (b) Four-year Programme (Direct Entry) Candidates seeking direct entry admission into first year of the four-year programme must satisfy the condition stated in one sitting in GCE Advanced Level/HSC Principal Level. The two subjects must be selected from Mathematics. Physics and Chemistry. Candidates with the National Diploma (ND) with minimum of Upper Credit, Higher National Diploma (HND) with minimum of Lower Credit and the National Certificate for Education, NCE (TECH), and other equivalent qualifications recognized by the University for the purpose of direct entry admission may also apply. Undergraduate Programme A five-year B.Eng. Degree programme is offered to students The courses in the first two years are common to all departments in the Faculty and comprise the basic science of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Programming; Engineering Drawing, Workshop Practice, General Studies and Management . In subsequent years the course covers all aspects of polymer and fibre science and technology, including polymer and fibre chemistry, polymer structure and properties, all aspect of textile technology comprising yarn manufacture, fabric production, dyeing and finishing of textiles, analysis and testing, economics, production and financial management. Every final year student is assigned a project which may be purely experimental work, a design or fabrication and which aims to integrate the various facet of the programme. Optional courses in various areas of polymer and textile technology are offered as electives in the fifth year to meet the individual requirement of the student. There is also a mandatory six-month industrial training and attachment under the Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The B.Eng. Degree emphasizes all the common core engineering courses as prescribed by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology to enable the student become registered Engineers.
