    : . HISTORY

    RADIOGRAPHY

Nnamdi Azikiwe University is one of Nigeria’s universities with a record of academic achievements and innovations, which gives it a distinct, mature character of the second generation university.

The need for a degree programme in medical radiography arose when two hitherto existing schools of radiography in Lagos and Ibadan could no longer attract students into the diploma course. The Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) programme in radiography was started in Nigeria at the University of Calabar in 1981. The University of Nigeria followed suit in 1983 and University of Maiduguri, in 2003. The Department of Radiography and Radiological Sciences was established in Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2004 as the fourth in Nigeria. Since its inception with the B. Sc programme, the department had grown in stature and now offers postgraduate courses in various fields such as medical imaging, radiation and environmental protection and dosimetry, film reporting, radiographic education, medical physics, radiographic health management, and  radiotherapy and oncology. The department collaborates with other training and health institutions in Nigeria notably University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, University of Calabar, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, University of Maiduguri, University College Hospital Ibadan and National Hospital Abuja.
