SOCIAL SCIENCES


The Faculty houses four departments: Department of Mass Communication: This department was established at the inception of Nnamdi Azikiwe University as a Federal University in 1992. The Department started as a unit in the Department of Sociology in the then Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It became an autonomous fully-fledged Department in 1996. The Department was established to teach courses leading to the award of Bachelors Degree in Mass Communication with 60 pioneer students in 1992. It graduated its first set of students in1997. It commenced postgraduate studies with the introduction of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science program in 2000/2001 academic session. A pre-degree diploma programme was started in the 2004/2005 academic year while a Ph.D programme was started in 2005/2006 academic year. Department of Political Science: The Department of Political Science evolved from the former Department of Social Sciences (1985/1986) and Department of Political Economy (1990). It produced its first graduates in 1989 and re-assumed the status of a full-fledged Department in 1992, following the conversion of the former Awka Campus of ASUTECH to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The Department offers courses leading to the award of B.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in the stress areas of political science. These include political theory/research methodology, Nigeria Politics and Government, Public Administration and International Relations. The Department recently introduced a Diploma programme in Politics and Local Government Studies. Department of Psychology: The Department started in 1985 as a two unit Department of Sociology/Psychology, which latter got demerged and became two fully-fledged Departments. The Department of Psychology awards Bacholor of Science (B.Sc.) Master of Science, (M.Sc.), Doctor of Philosophy, (Ph.D.) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD). The Department produced her first Doctoral graduates in 2005 and has since continued to produce many graduates. The Department also runs a two year diploma programme, which prepares candidates for admission into bachelors of science program in psychology. Candidates who desire knowledge in psychology to improve their efficiency in their chosen career are also admitted. Department of Sociology/Anthropology: The Department of Sociology/Anthropology came into existence during the first semester of the 1985/1986 academic session, when Social Science programmes became established within what was then called the Faculty of Humanities in the then Anambra State University of Technology. In 1992/1993 academic session, Mass communication Unit was created and joined Sociology/Anthropology to form one Department. In 1995/1996, Mass Communication became a separate Department of its own. In 1996/1997 Psychology was joined to Sociology/Anthropology Department to form Department of Sociology/Psychology. In 1999, Sociology/Anthropology became once again an independent Department, and has remained so to date. At present the Department awards Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Master of Science, (M.Sc.)and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degrees. It also runs a three year programme for Direct Entry students as well as two-year diploma programme to prepare/qualify men and women for the professional practice of Social Work.
