TEAM UNIZIK FINISHES 12TH FASU GAMES ON A HIGH NOTE, CLINCHES TWO SILVER AND ONE BRONZE MEDALS
Team Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has rounded off its participation at the 12th Fédération Africaine du Sport Universitaire (FASU) Games in Cairo, Egypt, on a strong note, recording notable achievements across three sporting disciplines.
The University’s female football team secured a bronze medal after an impressive 3–0 victory over Germany University, Cairo, in the third-place match played today.
The victory capped an impressive campaign for the UNIZIK female football team, which demonstrated determination and resilience throughout the competition and finished among the top three teams in the tournament.
In athletics, Nnatu Benedicta Chinazaekpere of the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, Faculty of Education, won a silver medal in the women’s 3000 metres steeplechase, adding another medal to Team UNIZIK’s haul.
Similarly, Ogisi Mary, also of the Department of Human Kinetics and Sports Science, also secured another silver medal in the female Poomsae Taekwondo event.
Interestingly, the two athletes had previously won silver medals in their respective events at the last Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) Games held at the University of Jos. Their latest achievements in Cairo further underscore their consistency and competitive strength on the university sports stage.
It will also be recalled that the UNIZIK female football team finished third at the last NUGA Games hosted by the University of Jos, before repeating the feat at the continental FASU Games in Cairo.
VICE-CHANCELLOR CHARGES ATHLETES TO BE GOOD AMBASSADORS
It would be recalled that ahead of the decisive events, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, spoke with the athletes on phone and charged them to remain worthy ambassadors of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Nigeria.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the commitment of the University Management to supporting the athletes and providing the necessary encouragement to enable them to achieve a successful outing at the continental competition.
SPORTS DIRECTORATE COMMENDS ATHLETES AND MANAGEMENT
Reacting to the team's performance, the Acting Director of Sports, Mrs. Anthonia Chukwudi, described the overall outing as encouraging, while noting that she had hoped for an even bigger medal haul.
She, however, commended the athletes for their dedication and impressive performances, particularly the female football team, whom she described as “the next Super Falcons of Nigeria.”
Mrs. Chukwudi expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his words of encouragement to the athletes, noting that his support helped to boost the morale and confidence of the team during the competition.
She assured that the experience gained in Cairo would be built upon, with the Sports Directorate committed to ensuring an even stronger performance in future competitions.
SPORTS COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN APPLAUDS TEAM'S RESILIENCE
The Chairman of the University Sports Committee (USC) and Leader of the Delegation, Prof. Derek Orji, commended the athletes for their resilience, discipline and determination throughout the competition.
Prof. Orji also appreciated the coaches and the host organisers for their efforts in making the Games a successful event. He described sports as an important instrument of international friendship, unity and cultural exchange, stressing its capacity to bring people and institutions from different countries together in the spirit of healthy competition.
With a bronze medal in women's football and two silver medals in athletics and taekwondo, Team UNIZIK is returning from Cairo with valuable competitive experience and a renewed determination to build on these achievements in future national and international competitions.
