The Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the University Management, even as it formally invited the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, to serve as Chief Host at its 2026 World Literacy Day celebration and the launch of its ₦100 million Lecture Halls and Offices Project.
The assurance was given when a delegation from the department paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor to congratulate him on his appointment as the University's 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor and to seek his continued support for the advancement of the department.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Head of Department, Prof. C. O. Madu, lauded Prof. Anyaehie for the remarkable strides recorded by the University within a short period under his administration. She described his leadership as visionary, innovative and result-oriented, noting that his transformational approach has inspired renewed confidence across the University community.
While wishing the Vice-Chancellor a successful and impactful tenure, Prof. Madu highlighted some of the challenges confronting the department, including inadequate academic and non-teaching staff, declining student enrolment, insufficient classroom furniture, inadequate office accommodation and other infrastructural deficits. She appealed for the intervention of the University Management to address the challenges in order to enhance effective teaching, learning and community service.
She further informed the Vice-Chancellor that the department would commemorate the 2026 World Literacy Day on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the ASUU Secretariat by 10:00 a.m. The event, themed "Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity," will also feature the official launch of the Department's ₦100 million Adult and Continuing Education Lecture Halls and Offices Project. She expressed optimism that the Vice-Chancellor's presence and support would add great value to the programme.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, appreciated the department for the visit, the goodwill expressed towards his administration and the gift presented to him. He commended the initiative to embark on a self-help infrastructural project, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to academic excellence and institutional development.
Prof. Anyaehie assured the department of the support of the University Management and accepted the invitation to participate in the World Literacy Day celebration.
On the challenges presented, the Vice-Chancellor advised the department to adopt a phased approach by prioritising its most pressing needs. He observed that classroom accommodation should receive immediate attention, while existing facilities should be optimally utilised through effective scheduling of lectures.
He also encouraged the department to intensify efforts towards promoting its academic programmes to attract more students, stressing that increased enrolment should be matched with improved facilities capable of providing a conducive teaching and learning environment.
The Vice-Chancellor further assured the delegation that the University Management would continue to work with the department in mobilising resources for infrastructural development. He appealed for patience, assuring them that their concerns would be addressed progressively, while disclosing his intention to undertake a working visit to the department to assess its needs firsthand.
In his vote of thanks, Prof. Williams E. Obiozor expressed profound appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his warm reception, valuable counsel and unwavering commitment to the development of the University. He described Prof. Anyaehie as a visionary, digitally-driven and transformational leader whose administration is laying a solid foundation for a more innovative and globally competitive UNIZIK.
He assured the Vice-Chancellor that the department would diligently implement his recommendations and remain committed to supporting the vision of the University Management while pursuing excellence in teaching, research and community engagement.
Other members of the delegation included Prof. Helen Adebola, Dr. O. C. Chukwuemerie, Dr. Apiti Anthony, Dr. Moses Enogheghase Orbor, Dr. Nwoye Cecilia Oby, Dr. Luke Chidiebele Ogbaka, and other staff of the Department of Adult and Continuing Education.
