UNIZIK Giants Progressive Club proposes N2million Awards for Best Graduating Students

Former student leaders of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, operating under the name "UNIZIK Giant Progressive Club", have proposed a ₦2 million award fund for best graduating students across the University’s campuses as part of efforts to promote academic excellence.

The proposal was presented during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, at his office on Friday, October 9, 2026.

Speaking during the visit, the President of the Club and former Director of Transport of the University, Engr. Opurum Emmanuel, said the visit was aimed at familiarising the Club with the Vice-Chancellor’s office and exploring areas of collaboration to support students and the wider University community.

Engr.Opurum described the Club as a body of like-minded individuals who had passed through the University, distinguished themselves in student leadership and gone on to achieve success in different fields of endeavour.

According to him, members had individually contributed to the development of the University through scholarships, payment of students’ fees and awards for outstanding academic performance before coming together under the Club.

Engr. Opurum disclosed that the Club was proposing to donate ₦2 million in support of the forthcoming combined convocation ceremonies for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions, explaining that the proposed fund would be shared equally between the two sessions, with ₦1 million allocated to each, and distributed among the best graduating students across the University’s campuses in Awka, Agulu, Nnewi and Ifite Ogwari.

He added that the Club remained open to other areas of support that the University might consider beneficial to its students and development.

In his response, Prof. Anyaehie commended the initiative, describing it as a welcome and commendable effort towards encouraging academic excellence and strengthening alumni contributions to the University.

The Vice-Chancellor however advised the Club to work closely with the University committee responsible for student awards to determine an appropriate distribution formula.

Prof. Anyaehie also recommended engaging the Students’ Affairs Unit to establish clear criteria for selecting scholarship beneficiaries and ensuring that the proposed support reached deserving students, assuring the delegation of the University’s willingness to collaborate with the Club in implementing its plans.

In his vote of thanks, Dr. Okoli Kizito, a member of the delegation, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for receiving the Club and providing an opportunity for interaction and partnership.

Dr. Okoli said the visit reflected the Club’s desire to identify with the University’s leadership mostly at this point in time during the leadership of Prof. Anyaehie and contribute to its progress acknowledging the importance of building a relationship with the administration to support the institution’s continued development.
