A GREATER UNIZIK IS POSSIBLE

UNIZIK MEDICAL CENTRE SECURES FULL ACCREDITATION FOR FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY TRAINING
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has secured full accreditation for the commencement of Residency Training in Family Medicine at its University Medical Centre.
The accreditation followed the successful fulfilment of four outstanding requirements identified during an earlier accreditation assessment conducted by a three-member team on October 9 and 10, 2026.
The accreditation team was led by Dr. (Rtd. Colonel) Akin Moses of the National Hospital, Abuja, with Moyosore Makinde of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Dr. Franklin Onuoha of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, as members.
Following the initial assessment, the Medical Centre worked diligently to address the identified gaps in line with the recommendations of the accreditation team. The University Management provided the necessary support and timely interventions, facilitating the provision of required facilities, equipment, personnel and other institutional resources needed to meet the prescribed standards for residency training.
As part of the accreditation process, Dr. Franklin Onuoha returned to the Medical Centre on November 3, 2026, for a follow-up assessment to verify the implementation of the recommendations contained in the team's earlier report.
The successful outcome of the follow-up assessment culminated in the award of full accreditation to the University Medical Centre for the commencement of Family Medicine Residency Training.
The cheery news of the positive development was communicated to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Barr Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi by the Director, Medical Services, Dr. Jane Ezeonu alongside the Board Chairman, Prof Lasbery Asomugha.
In a formal notification to the Vice-Chancellor, the Director of Medical Services, Dr Jane Ezeonu, expressed profound appreciation to the University Management for its support, commitment and timely intervention, which contributed significantly to the successful accreditation exercise.
She noted that the Medical Centre remained committed to sustaining the required standards, ensuring continuous quality improvement and providing an enabling environment for effective residency training.
The achievement represents another significant milestone in UNIZIK's commitment to strengthening its healthcare services, advancing postgraduate medical education and contributing to the training of highly skilled medical professionals.
It also underscores the University's determination to expand its institutional capacity and enhance its contribution to the delivery of quality healthcare in Nigeria.
