Registrar Leads Capacity-Building Workshop, Unveils 5Cs of Effective College Leadership

The Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke, has charged non-teaching staff of the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), to embrace professionalism, integrity, continuous learning and technological innovation as essential requirements for effective service delivery in the modern higher education system.

Dr. Okeke gave the charge while serving as the resource person at a one-day capacity-building workshop organised recently for the non-teaching staff of the college.

The workshop, which brought together members of the College’s non-teaching workforce, focused on strengthening administrative capacity, improving workplace efficiency and equipping staff with the knowledge and skills required to support institutional transformation.

In her presentation, the UNIZIK Registrar addressed critical aspects of effective leadership, professionalism, work ethics and administrative efficiency, stressing that a strong administrative system is indispensable to the successful delivery of teaching, research and community service in higher education institutions.

A major highlight of her presentation was the 5Cs of College Leadership — Character, Competence, Communication, Collaboration and Commitment.

Dr. Okeke explained that these qualities are essential for building effective institutions, urging staff to demonstrate competence in their respective responsibilities while maintaining integrity, accountability, respect and confidentiality in the discharge of their duties.

She also challenged the participants to familiarise themselves with institutional rules and regulations and to uphold appropriate workplace conduct at all times.

On work ethics, the Registrar emphasised the importance of punctuality, diligence, honesty, loyalty and teamwork, while drawing attention to practices that could undermine institutional credibility, productivity and effective service delivery.

Dr. Okeke further encouraged the staff to embrace technology, proper planning, effective delegation, time management and continuous professional development as tools for enhancing workplace efficiency and adapting to the changing demands of higher education administration.

She identified bureaucratic delays, poor record-keeping, unclear guidelines, inadequate interdepartmental communication and resistance to technological change among the challenges that institutions must confront in their pursuit of greater administrative efficiency.

Another major feature of the presentation was the NOCEN Service Standard Triangle, which linked:

Professionalism with skill and competence;

Work ethics with trust and integrity; and

Work efficiency with results and timeliness.

In her concluding remarks, Dr. Okeke urged the participants to lead with integrity, work with professionalism, uphold strong ethical standards and remain committed to delivering timely and effective services.

Earlier, the Provost of NOCEN, Engr. Prof. Victor Ifeanyi Obiora Ndirika, FNIAE, described the workshop as timely and necessary, particularly against the backdrop of the ongoing transformation of the College.

The Provost noted that institutional transformation goes beyond infrastructure and physical development, stressing that the people responsible for driving and sustaining institutional growth must equally be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills.

He observed that the transition from analogue to digital systems had created new demands for workers in education and administration, making continuous training and retraining essential for improved service delivery.

Prof. Ndirika urged the non-teaching staff to take full advantage of the knowledge shared during the workshop and apply it towards improving their skills, professionalism, productivity and overall contribution to the College.

He also commended the Organising Committee, led by Dr. J.N. Achufusi, for organising the programme, while acknowledging the development strides of the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, particularly in the transformation of NOCEN and the state.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks by the Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dr. J.N. Achufusi.

The programme provided an important platform for learning, reflection and professional development.

For the records, the current provost of NOCEN, Prof. Ndirika is a staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University before Governor Soludo appointed him to the current position at the College.

Our capacity Registrar, Dr Chinenye Gloria Okeke showcased and delivered the UNIZIK Brand proving her mettle during her presentation in the workshop.
