UNIZIK SUG Senate Poll: Okeke Emerges Chief Judge as Dimitri Clinches Senate Presidency
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has elected a new set of senators to represent the Student’s Senate Council following elections held on Monday, September 21, 2026.
In the judicial contest, Ifeanyi Godfrey Okeke of the Faculty of Law emerged as the new SUG Chief Judge, defeating his fellow Faculty of Law candidate, Chiugo Catherine Nnoluka, by seven votes to six.
A total of 13 accredited voters participated in the Chief Judge election.
In the legislative arm, Shedrach Chiemerie Divine Dimitri emerged as the new SUG Senate President, securing 50 votes against 28 votes scored by Izukanne Charles. The contest recorded 79 accredited voters, with one vote declared invalid.
Okaro Chisom Maryann emerged unopposed as Deputy Senate President, while Ogidi Wisdom was elected Chief Whip with 44 votes, defeating Abba Kingsley Anayo, who polled 36 votes.
Emmanuel Alokwem emerged unopposed as Deputy Chief Whip.
Ahead of the elections, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, charged the contestants and successful candidates to uphold integrity, responsibility and diligence in the discharge of their duties.
Announcing the results, the Returning Officer, Dr. Anthony Apiti, Sub-Dean of Students’ Affairs, congratulated the newly elected student leaders and subsequently administered oaths of allegiance to them before their assumption of office.
Earlier in the election, the outgoing Senate President, Sen. David Nwachukwu Odo in a valedictory speech said serving in that office was both a privilege and a responsibility.
He noted that throughout his tenure, they remained committed to strengthening the legislative arm of the Students’ Union and ensuring that the Senate remained a functional platform for representation, accountability and constructive engagement.
He said one of the major achievements of their tenure was the successful passage of six Bills into Law, all aimed at addressing areas of importance to the students and strengthening the framework of students’ governance.
“We also worked to give the Senate greater visibility and relevance through legislative events, programmes and engagements that promoted the values and importance of the legislative arm of the Union.
The journey was not without its challenges. However, with the cooperation of the Distinguished Senators, the SUG Executive, Dean of Students Affairs, University Management and the wider student community, we were able to make meaningful progress.”

The elections mark the emergence of a new set of student representatives who will oversee key legislative and judicial responsibilities within the Students’ Union Government of the University.
The newly elected officials are expected to assume their respective responsibilities in accordance with the provisions governing the Students’ Union Government.
