Team UNIZIK has returned to Nigeria from Cairo, Egypt, following an impressive outing at the 12th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games, where the University’s contingent secured two silver medals and one bronze medal.

The victorious team, accompanied by four officials, arrived at the International Wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, at 11:55 a.m. on Thursday, 17th September 2026, aboard an Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350-1000.

The emotional reception at the airport was marked by tears of joy from some members of the contingent, who expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and Nigeria at the prestigious continental university sports fiesta.

Speaking on her achievement, Nnatu Benedicta, one of the silver medalists, expressed delight at winning a medal at the continental competition and thanked the University for the support and encouragement given to the team.

Another silver medalist, Ogisi Mary, equally expressed her happiness over the feat, describing the medal as a reward for the team’s hard work, commitment and determination.

Speaking on behalf of the bronze-winning female football team, the team’s coach, Mr. Franklin Ohazulike, commended the players for their remarkable fighting spirit, resilience and determination throughout the competition.

He noted that the team overcame several strong opponents before eventually finishing as the third-best female university football team in Africa. He attributed the achievement to the team’s early preparations, commitment and the substantial support received from the University and private donors.

The Acting Director of Sports, Mrs. Anthonia Chukwudi, thanked God for granting the team a safe journey back to Nigeria. She also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the student-athletes before, during and after the competition.

According to her, the discipline and exemplary conduct displayed by the athletes reflected the values instilled in them by the University Management and their parents.

The victorious contingent is expected to proceed to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, in the coming days, where the team will be formally received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, alongside members of the University community.

The return of Team UNIZIK marks a memorable chapter in the University’s sporting history and further underscores the institution’s commitment to nurturing sporting talents and providing its students with opportunities to excel on the continental stage.
