The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has received an Award of Recognition from the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), UNIZIK Chapter, in appreciation of his steadfast support for the campaign against substance abuse and his unwavering commitment to creating a drug-free academic environment.
The honour was bestowed during a courtesy visit by the leadership of WADA to the Vice-Chancellor following the successful hosting of the 2026 World Drug Day celebration. The visit also provided an opportunity for the organisation to present the outstanding students who distinguished themselves in the inter-faculty drug awareness quiz competition held as part of the celebration.
Leading the delegation, the President of WADA, UNIZIK Chapter, Dr. Alexander Orji, commended Prof. Anyaehie for his consistent encouragement of programmes that promote responsible living and protect students from the dangers of drug abuse.
According to Dr. Orji, the 2026 World Drug Day celebration, held on Friday, July 24, 2026, attracted an impressive 1,090 students from faculties across the University, making it one of the chapter's most impactful awareness campaigns. He noted that the event featured an inter-faculty quiz competition designed to deepen students' understanding of the harmful effects of substance abuse while encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.
Dr. Orji thereafter presented the three overall winners of the competition to the Vice-Chancellor.
They are Ndubusi Prosper Sopuruchi, who emerged in first position; Nwafor Chisom Christian, who came second; and Okorie Valentine Chibueze, who secured the third position.
Responding, Prof. Anyaehie congratulated the WADA team on the successful organisation of the programme, describing the initiative as a significant contribution to the University's vision of producing not only academically sound graduates but also morally responsible citizens.
He observed that the remarkable turnout of students reflected the growing awareness of the need to reject drug abuse and embrace positive values. The Vice-Chancellor urged the organisation to sustain its advocacy through continuous engagement with students, stressing that education, mentorship and value reorientation remain effective tools in combating substance abuse.
Reaffirming the University's commitment, Prof. Anyaehie assured WADA of the institution's continued support for initiatives that promote character development, responsible leadership, academic excellence and a safe, healthy learning environment for all students.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of the Award of Recognition to the Vice-Chancellor for his exceptional support of WADA's activities. The trophies and cash prizes won by the outstanding students during the quiz competition were also formally presented, drawing applause from members of the delegation.
Among those present were Mrs. Ezeanyika Emilia, representing Pastor Ezeanyika, sponsor of the 2026 World Drug Day celebration; Rev. Dr. Maria Chinecherem Uzonwanne, Head of the Department of Economics; Obi-Obiora Hilda Uche, Legal Adviser, WADA UNIZIK Chapter; Dr. Adebayo Oladeyo, General Secretary, WADA UNIZIK Chapter; Dr. Chimezie Ukeje, ICT Officer; Anyaegbu Joachim Okwuchukwu, WADA Student Representative for the Faculty of Engineering; and Emeka Praise Chinweike, WADA Student Representative for the Faculty of Agriculture.
The visit underscored the shared resolve of the University management and WADA to strengthen anti-drug advocacy, empower students with the right values, and sustain efforts toward making UNIZIK a model drug-free campus.
