VC commits to pushing UNIZIK Medical School among the best in Nigeria
As MDCN Team begins Programme Re-accreditation, Dental Programme Accreditation Exercise
Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie has stated the commitment of his administration towards making the university medical college rank among the best in Nigeria in areas of infrastructure, manpower and expertise.
The Vice Chancellor spoke on Monday, September 21, 2026 while receiving the team from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) visiting the University for the Re-accreditation of the Medical programmes and accreditation for the Dental programme.
Prof Anyaehie reiterated that the University was committed to building one of the best medical schools in Nigeria and acknowledged that the development was a work in progress requiring continued support, encouragement and investment.
He disclosed that the University had benefited from funding of about N4 billion for projects relating to general development of the medical school, while additional support of about N2 billion had been secured for medical equipment covering Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. He also disclosed that another N2 billion had been provided for clinical skills acquisition, with land already allocated for the project.
Prof. Anyaehie explained that the investments were part of the University's broader effort to improve its facilities and create an environment capable of supporting quality medical education.
The Vice-Chancellor further highlighted the University's ongoing digital transformation, stating that several administrative and academic processes had been digitised. He explained that student clearance can now be completed online, with systems designed to facilitate timely processing and the issuance of provisional certificates containing barcodes for authentication.
He also disclosed that the University had taken delivery of about 100 digital boards, with those meant for the College of Medicine expected to be delivered as part of the institution's digitalisation drive adding that the University was introducing further technology-driven initiatives, including digital identification cards capable of automatically recording students' attendance when they entered lecture venues.
According to him, the University was also working towards reducing the number of students standing during lectures by admitting only numbers that could be adequately accommodated by available facilities.
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed that, beginning from October, newly admitted students would commence General Studies lectures online from home before physical resumption, while about 80 percent of General Studies lectures would subsequently be conducted online, with students coming to the University mainly for tutorials.
Prof. Anyaehie expressed confidence that the MDCN exercise would provide an opportunity for the University to demonstrate the progress it had made and identify areas requiring further improvement.
He thanked the delegation for the visit, expressing optimism that the outcome of the exercise would further strengthen the University's medical education programmes.
Earlier, the delegation was formally welcomed by the Director, Academic Planning, Prof. Angela Ufele-Obiesie, while the introduction of the delegates was conducted by the MDCN Administrative Officer, Mrs. Ayobami.
The Deputy Registrar of MDCN, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, in a remark described the visit as a delight, noting that it provides the opportunity for the Council to interact with the leadership of the University while carrying out its accreditation responsibilities.
Dr. Nwakanma conveyed the warm regards and felicitation of the leadership of the MDCN, particularly the Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Fatima Kyara and congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on the strides recorded by the University within the few months of his assumption of office.
He noted that the MDCN team was in the University to ensure that the standards required for the training of medical and dental students were maintained and, where possible, improved upon.
According to Dr Nwakanma, the exercise was necessitated by the University's invitation for the re-accreditation of its Medical programme and the consideration of the proposed Dental programme.
He stressed that medical education was capital-intensive and that the establishment of a Dental programme required significant commitment in terms of manpower, infrastructure and other resources.
Dr. Nwakanma explained that the MDCN was committed to ensuring that medical and dental education in Nigeria met globally accepted standards, noting that the Council's licensing and regulatory role contributed to the recognition enjoyed by Nigerian-trained doctors both within and outside the country.
The Prof. sought the permission of the Vice-Chancellor for the team to proceed to the College of Medicine Nnewi, to inspect the available manpower and infrastructure for the training of medical and dental students adding that the team would return to brief the University Management on its findings.
Principal Officers of the university present during the courtesy visit included the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Hilda Osisioma and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Alex Asigbo. The Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. Jude Kennedy C Emejulu and the Dean, Dentistry, Dr. Linda Okoye.
