The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka wishes to announce the constitution of the 10th Governing Council which was inaugurated in Abuja on July 4, 2024. This distinguished Council is headed by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, MFR, who is Chairman and Pro-Chancellor. Ambassador Mbadiwe, from Imo State, is a seasoned economist, administrator, and legal practitioner.

He has previously served as the Ambassador of Nigeria to the Republic of Congo and also chaired the boards of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Other members of the Council include:
– Hon. Augustine Onyedebelu: With over 30 years of diverse experience in healthcare management and business development, Augustine Onyedebelu has a proven track record of success in both public and private sectors. His career has been marked by strategic leadership roles that emphasize optimizing efficiency and enhancing systems. As the Managing Director of Sure-Care Medical Group and Austex Group Limited, he has demonstrated visionary leadership, significantly improving healthcare accessibility and business growth. His expertise extends to the political arena, where he serves as the South-East Zonal Publicity Secretary for the APC, leveraging strategic communication to foster strategic relationships within the South-East zone. This extensive background, combined with his academic achievements, underlines his commitment to driving impactful and sustainable improvements in every role he undertakes.

– Brig. Gen. Funso Oyeneyin (rtd): A seasoned military officer with 27 years of service in the Nigerian Army. Brig. Gen. Oyeneyin is an expert in civil-military relations, education, library and information science, security analysis, and is a prolific writer and speaker. While active in the Army, Gen Oyeneyin held key command, staff, and instructional appointments, rising to Brigadier General.

– Hon. Oladejo AbdulHafiz Olakunle: From Oyo State, Hon. Olakunle is a core professional versed in strategic organizational growth, with an academic background in Political Science and Physics. He boasts extensive experience as a CEO, Director, and Business Executive Partner in agriculture, IT, and education. AbdulHafiz is a member of various professional bodies and has been recognized with awards for his leadership and contributions.

– Engr. Amiolemen Abraham Osahon, MNSE: From Edo State, Engr. Osahon is a Civil Engineer and Financial Management Expert. He is a former Commissioner for Infrastructure in Edo State. He holds extensive experience in construction and real estate.

– Professor Meschach Nnama Umenweke: A lawyer and notary public, Prof. Umenweke is the former Dean of the Faculty of Law and currently the Chief Legal Officer of the University. He represents the Convocation in the Council.

– Rev. Sam Nnaemeka Ufoh: Currently the acting Registrar of the University. Rev. Ufoh has served as Deputy Registrar (Personnel) and is one of the Congregation representatives in the Council.
– Mr Adegboye Adebola Adekunle: A native of Osun State, Mr Adekunle joined the Federal Civil Service in 1991 as an Education Officer II and rose through the ranks to become a Director in 2018. Presently, he is the Director in charge of the Federal Education Quality Assurance Service Department at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja. He served in the last Council but attended the Council meeting once before it was dissolved.

– Professor Harry Obi-Nwosu: A professor of Clinical-Forensic Psychology and the Director of UNIZIK Centre for Counselling and Career Development, Prof. Obi-Nwosu is one of the Senate Representatives in the Council.

– Prof. Nkechinyere Anthonia Nwokoye: A professor of Igbo literature and Director of the Centre for Arts, Culture and Humanities, Prof. Nwokoye is one of the Senate Representatives in the Council.

– Rev. Fr. Prof. BonaChristus Umeogu: A professor of philosophy, a former Dean, Faculty of Arts and currently Director of the Directorate of Igbo Village & Centre for African Civilization (IVACAC). He is one of the Congregation representatives in the Council.

– Professor Ezimma K.N Nnabuife: A professor of Business Administration, former Dean of Management Sciences, former Director of Unizik Business School, and currently Director, Public Private Partnership. Prof. Nnabuife is among the four Senate Representatives in the Council.

– Professor Lasbery Asomugha: A professor of Anatomy and presently, the Director of Unizik Medical Services, Prof. Asomugha is one of the four Senate Representatives in the Council.

The 10th Governing Council held its inaugural meeting on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at the Council Chamber of the university.
