Health Tech for Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs

The Management of Information Communication Technology Unit (MICTU) Software Services Nnamdi Azikiwe University, in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 8 Entrepreneurship Committee, successfully organized a two-day event aimed at inspiring STEM students in Nigeria.

This initiative was hosted by Engr. Sandra Nwokoye, a lecturer in the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering and an IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Week Ambassador. It was co-hosted by Dr. Aniedu Azubuike, Director of MICTU (Software Services) and Chair of the IEEE Southeast Subsection, Nigeria.

The event was designed to encourage innovative health technology solutions among students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. It featured a dynamic mix of activities, including a pitch competition, keynote sessions, and networking opportunities.

Day One: Pitch Competition Summary
The grand finale of the pitch competition showcased innovative Health Tech solutions from pre-selected teams before a distinguished panel of judges. After a rigorous evaluation, the top three teams emerged:
• Team Thyreos (Afe Babalola University & FUTA) developed a malaria prevention and health monitoring prototype with early symptom detection and a chemical-free mosquito repellent.
Team Naija Clinic (UI, OOU, & FUTO) presented a telemedicine platform addressing healthcare access challenges through remote consultations.
Team Tezon (UNIZIK) introduced an online health information platform featuring Daily Health Tips, an Ailment Archive, and an Interactive Message Board (in development).
A panel of seasoned judges from the health, technology, and entrepreneurship sectors provided valuable feedback, ensuring a fair and insightful assessment while helping teams refine their ideas.

Day Two: Keynote Speeches and Sponsorship

The second day featured insightful keynote sessions on key entrepreneurial topics:

Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs): Emphasizing the importance of confidentiality in business.
Intellectual Property Rights: Educating entrepreneurs on patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
• Affordable & Sustainable Health Tech Solutions: Exploring scalable healthcare innovations for low-income African communities.
