JUPEB UNIZIK on the rise, records unprecedented applicants as Director hails VC’s support
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka recorded unprecedented number of applicants in the 2025/2026 session with over 1000 students applying and 968 students sitting for their examinations.
Director, JUPEB, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Chidi Akunne who made the disclosure during the recent exam monitoring exercise by the office of the Vice Chancellor, praised the University Chief Executive, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie for his immense support to the programme which he confirmed , has yielded great impact.
Prof Akunne noted that since the commencement of JUPEB programme in UNIZIK in 2016, JUPEB has continued to grow with subscribers and applicants into the programme surging in number every admission year with the last set hitting over 1000 subscribers.
The Director who commended the Vice Chancellor for the massive support noted that before now, over the years, the lecture hall would only accommodate 400 and 500 students but with the increasing number, shortage of lecture halls became a serious issue.
He disclosed that the supervisors from the Lagos headquarters of JUPEB also complained about the situation and he took the matter to the vice chancellor who graciously approved that they look for alternative lecture halls until they searched for and settled at the Faculty of Biosciences Hall.
“We came in, cleared all the debris, prepared about seven halls to accommodate the students. Before now, the students were scattered across different halls among them students offering arts, management courses and others stayed in different locations thereby making coordination very difficult. The moment the halls at Biosciences Faculty were secured. JUPEB came together in the real sense of it and all the courses are now done inside the place” Prof. Akunne stated.
The JUPEB Director also disclosed that the VC also approved the production of about 300 benches enough to accommodate all the students and expressed optimism that with the Vice Chancellor’s approval to move JUPEB to Mbaukwu community where accommodation and spaces won’t be any problem, a more productive JUPEB has come to stay in UNIZIK
He also disclosed that the JUPEB management spent resources in lighting up the place, construction of conveniences, standby generator, procurement of over 16 CCTV cameras and screens to make the exam classes habitable.
Prof. Akunne also appreciated members of his team for the successes recorded so far noting that without their cooperation and team spirit among them, they won’t have succeeded.
“As a director, I cannot do it alone. The deputy directors, about three of them, they are wonderful and they all helped a lot. JUPEB is a national programme beyond UNIZIK. There are over 140 universities in Nigeria running JUPEB programmes but I can say UNIZIK JUPEB is now among the best.
Student applicants are really subscribing to the programme. I believe that the 2026/2027 will record higher number. The forms are on sale right now and I know there will be surge of applicants after the conclusion of the regular JAMB university admissions.
“The programme admits students from second year if the student scales through. The markings and results are processed from the Lagos headquarters and then sent to Vice Chancellors on release”
Also speaking, the Team Lead from Lagos headquarters who came for the monitoring exercise, Prof. Lawrence Olusola Ige expressed delight and satisfaction with the UNIZIK JUPEB programme.
“It has been impressive as students comported themselves well. Hospitality is top-notch and the reception by the Vice Chancellor was warmly too. The exam process has been excellent and there are high prospects in JUPEB UNIZIK. Infact, what we saw on ground reflects on the motto of the university-discipline, self-reliance and excellence” Prof. Ige concluded.
