The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe w2University, Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has rewarded the university’s Debate Club with ₦1 million following its outstanding performance at the Nigeria National Universities Debate Championship held in September 2026.

Prof. Anyaehie announced the reward during a courtesy visit by the victorious team to his office on Friday, October 16, 2026, where the club presented its championship trophy and medals in recognition of the university’s achievement.

Speaking during the visit, the Director of International Collaboration and Linkages, Prof. Charles Nwadigwe, who oversees the club, said the team had emerged as the best debating club in the country, winning the championship trophy and seven additional medals in spelling competitions.

Prof. Nwadigwe formally presented the victorious team and its trophy to the Vice-Chancellor, noting that four of the participants were present at the meeting, while five others were at the university’s Nnewi Campus writing their examinations.

In his response, Prof. Anyaehie congratulated the team for making the university proud and commended its commitment to excellence announcing a reward of ₦100,000 for each of the nine contestants and an additional ₦100,000 for the club’s Secretariat bringing the total reward to ₦1 million.

In his vote of thanks, the President of the Debate Club, Chiezie Anthony, expressed profound gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their support, which he said had enabled the team to participate in major competitions.

Anthony recalled that the university had supported the club’s participation in the All-Nigerian Universities Debate Championship in Enugu earlier in the year, where it won the Debate of the Year Award.

The young President noted that the club had made several attempts to win the national championship over the years before finally achieving the feat in September describing the latest victory as a significant milestone for the club and assured the university management that its members would continue to uphold the institution’s reputation through excellence in debate and other intellectual competitions.

The club president further disclosed that, following its national victory, the team had been selected to represent the university at the Pan-African Universities Debate Championship, scheduled to hold at Catan University, Abuja, from December 12 to 20, 2026.

He expressed optimism that the team would build on its national success and return with another trophy at the continental competition.

The highlight of the presentation was the presentation of medals to the participants by the Vice-Chancellor, who personally decorated the team members in recognition of their remarkable achievement.

Those present during the visit included Nnaemeka Victor and Enujioke Chinecherem of the Nnewi Campus; Edigbue Paul of the Awka Campus; Kenechukwu Jane Ejim, administrative staff member; and Nnuka Augustina, Deputy Registrar, Directorate of International Collaboration and Linkages.
