REPOSITIONING UNIZIK HIGH SCHOOL

UNIZIK VC Orders Immediate Release of Withheld Students’ Results, Assures High School Staff of Management’s Intervention
The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has directed staff of the University’s High School to immediately release students’ results withheld over unresolved salary and welfare-related grievances.
Prof. Anyaehie gave the directive on Friday, August 21, 2026, when he received members of the CONUDSS Staff Welfare Committee of the UNIZIK High School during an interactive session at his office.
The delegation, led by a Physics teacher, Mr. Egwu Ebeneza O., expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for granting them an audience and recalled that the committee had met with him about six months earlier to discuss challenges confronting staff of the High School, particularly issues relating to salaries and welfare.
Mr. Egwu said the Vice-Chancellor had previously directed an upward review of staff salaries and welfare packages, but noted that implementation had yet to commence despite several engagements with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and other relevant authorities.
He appealed to the Vice-Chancellor to intervene and ensure the implementation of the approved salary adjustment.
He also raised the issue of staff conversion, suggesting that qualified senior staff of the High School could, where appropriate, be converted to University staff, thereby creating opportunities for some to serve as academic or administrative staff.
Responding, Prof. Anyaehie appreciated the delegation for bringing their concerns forward but cautioned that some actions taken by the staff could worsen, rather than resolve, the challenges confronting the school.

On staff conversion, the Vice-Chancellor explained that moving staff from the High School to the University would create vacancies that would eventually have to be filled. He therefore said the proposal would be considered within the context of future employment decisions, stressing that conversion alone could not address the underlying challenges facing the school.
Addressing the salary concerns, Prof. Anyaehie explained that the proposed salary increase had been considered alongside the need for an adjustment in school fees. He, however, disclosed that Management had decided that the salary improvement should not be delayed until the new school fees were implemented.
The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the financial difficulties confronting the school management in meeting the new wage obligations without additional funding and appealed to the staff to exercise patience while the issues were being addressed.
Prof. Anyaehie strongly condemned the withholding of students’ results, describing the action as counterproductive and detrimental to the students.
He directed the staff to release the results immediately and return to the negotiation table to resolve their grievances.
“Go and release the results, then come back for negotiation,” the Vice-Chancellor directed.
He further appealed to the staff to maintain peace in the school, assuring them that Management would continue to address the issues confronting them.
Earlier, another member of the delegation, Mrs. Okechukwu Oluchi, identified what she described as a major concern among staff: that some newly employed workers in the High School currently receive salaries higher than those of some older staff members.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor assured the delegation that the matter, alongside other concerns raised regarding the school, would be carefully examined.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation at the end of the meeting, Mr. Egwu assured the Vice-Chancellor that the staff would return to the school and release the students’ results. He expressed regret over the action, explaining that it was not intended to create a negative impression.
Other members of the delegation included Blessed Chiobi, a Biology teacher, and Ezidimma Izuchukwu K., a Computer Studies teacher.
The interactive session ended with the Vice-Chancellor reiterating Management’s commitment to resolving the challenges through dialogue, while urging all parties to maintain peace and work together to ensure the smooth and effective running of the UNIZIK High School.
