The Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku has been installed as a fellow, Academy of Environmental Health by the Nigerian Academy of Environmental Health Scientists.


Prof. Ahaneku alongside the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) Dr. Dominic Ojiabor Abonyi, were installed as Fellows of the Academy. The event which attracted members of the Academy as well as Environmental health officers was held at the Council Chambers of the university. The delegation was led by the president of the Academy, Prof. Agwu Amadi.


Speaking at the event, the Vice-President of the academy, Prof. Godson Ana stated that history is being made in Nnamdi Azikiwe University as the occasion marked the official flagging off of some of the issues concerning the academy. According to him, “The choice and name of the institution is very historic and very strategic. It is a coincidence that the university named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria is playing host to the first outing of the academy”.


“Environmental Health has metamorphosed over the years from the initial issues of hygiene, sanitation waste disposal to trans-boundary movement of chemicals, green, energy, chemistry and climate change. “Our desire and expectation will be that arising from this gathering, it would not just amount to ceremonies in the past, it would be followed up with proactive activities and actions that will cause necessary changes in the country”.


Moreso, he said that in Nigeria, we always wait for outbreak of different diseases and pump resources to handle the epidemics. The Government should prioritize and make budgetary provision to the environmental health sector which is fundamental in addressing issues of environmental health. We need to make our presence highly desirously felt.

He further disclosed that the VC and Prof. Abonyi were selected because of their passion, doggedness, commitment and singular effort in promoting skills acquisition, training and propagation of the discipline in the university.


In his remarks, Prof. Ahaneku expressed his joy over the honour, stating that it is a call to greater action. He noted that the wellness of Nigerians should be of utmost priority.


In his words, “We must continue to pursue the wellness of this nation through this call, to continue to work for humanity; we need to activate and conscientize our people in order to pursue this wonderful goal. He noted that the University’s doors are open to collaborate with stakeholders nationally, regionally and globally.


Members of the delegate include; Prof. M. K. C Sridhar, Yakubu Mohammed Baba, Dr. Chinasa Amadi, Dr. U. Zacchaeus, Dr. T.I.N Ezejiofor and Dr. Elizabeth Oloruntoba.




Igbos have been urged to brace up to the political atmosphere in Nigeria and take their pride of place.

This formed the crux at the 10th Chief Dr. F. C Ogbalu memorial lecture, which was held at the University Auditorium recently.

During his opening remarks, the Chairman of the event, Honourable Benjamin Obi called on Ndi Igbo to brace up and be politically active.


The Guest Lecturer, Prof. Chibu Onukawa spoke on the topic: “Onodu Ndi Igbo na Ndorondoro Ochichi Naijiria Malite N’Afo 1966 ruo Ugbua”.


Prof. Onukawa emphasized that the Igbo nation have suffered relegation to the background right after the programme of 1966.


According to him, the Igbos were rarely conspicuous in the respective governments that took over the reign of power after the civil war. He posited that in the creation of states, the Igbos suffered great neglect, as they were subjected to becoming the least and inferior tribe in the country.


Prof. Onukawa frowned at the selfishness and hatred that has continued to thrive among some Igbo politicians who have continued to become sell outs to their people. He pointed out that some politicians of Igbo extraction have joined forces with their enemies to inflict more hardship on their people and readily turned blind eyes to the travails of their people.


He charged the Igbos to rise up and fight for their rights politically and otherwise. He however noted that despite being marginalized and relegated to the background, the Igbo race have continued to progress geometrically compared to other regions in the country.


Earlier in his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku called on the Igbos to go back to their roots and project that which has given them identity. He noted that the Igbo race is indispensable in the total well being, growth and development of Nigeria in all sectors. He opined that the time is ripe for Ndi Igbo to rediscover their identity and contribute immensely to the socioeconomic development of the country in all sectors such as Agriculture, Arts, Culture, Sciences, Industrialization and most importantly, Politics.


Speaking on Igbo Language, Prof. Ahaneku said as a measure to keep the language, the University has incorporated Igbo subject in the compulsory General Studies (GS) course that all students admitted into the University must pass before obtaining the Degree honours of the University.


In his remark, the Governor of Anambra state, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, culture and tourism, Hon. Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta commended the University for towing the noble line of immortalizing Dr. Ogbalu who was in the fore front of promoting the Igbo language and identity. He called on the Igbos to protect and promote their culture, language and identity.



The vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS has received the accreditation team from Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) for the B.A. Chinese and the Industrial and Production Engineering Programmes. The team, led by Prof. Francis Egbokhare and Engr. Prof. L. T. Tuleun, paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor on arrival.

Welcoming the team, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his delight and thanked the NUC for embarking on the system review.  In his words, “This is an assignment we all have to embark on to strengthen the university system in terms of quality assurance. It is one major assignment we need to encourage and promote”, Ahaneku said.


Prof. Ahaneku stated that the university had embraced the “Igwebuike” concept as an approach to infrastructural development in the university.  According to him, the University appeals to well meaning Nigerians and friends of the institution to assist in its development.


He appreciated the team for the sacrifice, adding that history would not forget the sacrifices of accreditation teams for the role they played in quality assurance in the university system.

Stating the motive for the visit, Prof. Tuleun who spoke on behalf of the two panels disclosed that they came on a fact finding mission from the NUC, on the status of the two programmes in the university.  He said that they were not in the university for witch-hunting, as they would be fair, objective and honest in their mission. The professor posited that accreditation is geared towards improving the university system.  He further expressed optimism that the panels would do a good job which would in turn rub off on the university, NUC and Nigeria at large.




The Faculty of Environmental Sciences, UNIZIK has planted 150 trees within the university as part of her programmes to mark the 2017 World Environment day as mapped out by the United Nations.


The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, academic, Prof. Charles Esimone actively participated in the tree planting.


Speaking shortly after the tree planting, Prof. Ahaneku commended the Faculty of Environmental Sciences for aligning with the University in her quest to celebrate the environment.


He explained that without good environment, living things would not have enough oxygen to even exist. He asserted that it is salutary that the United Nation has designated 5th of June every year as World Environment day, as the environment which we live in is daily assailed on all fronts by man’s unwholesome practices, leading environment threatening consequences which according to him, include pollution, degradation of the ecosystem and reliance on fossil fuels, leading to global warming. In his words, “we have health benefits by having trees around.  We need to re-educate ourselves, engage in advocacy campaign, as everyone needs to be part of this crusade”.


He commended the potential and expertise in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences which he described as enormous. According to him, “we need to align our intellectual resources to change the face of humanity. To the students he said, take advantage of the mentors in the faculty, look up to them, as we have adequate manpower in the faculty”.




The Faculty of Environmental Sciences, UNIZK has organized her 11th annual lecture and 2nd National Conference with the theme: “Building Collapse in Nigeria: challenges and prospects”.


The event which was held at the university auditorium was part of the programs to mark the 2017 World Environment Day.


In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku emphasized the need to promote sustainable development efforts worldwide, that would protect the environment. He stated that the prevarication of the present United States administration of the extant Paris Climate Change, Agreement, calls for a lot of concern. On the importance of the environment and the need to curb the insidious damage being done to it, Prof. Ahaneku disclosed that the university recently obtained the approval of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to mount a degree programme in Environmental Health. He explained that the intent is to produce crop of professionals who, by their training, are well equipped to grapple with the challenges of promoting a wholesome environment.

He further commended the faculty for planting one hundred and fifty trees within the university, which according to him is noble, noting that the public lecture and national conference would generate ideas and recommendations that would help put a halt to these sad events.


The Guest Lecturer and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Kabir Bala stated that building collapse, a phenomenon witnessed globally, is characterized by the compromise in structural integrity of a building’s structural elements, resulting to its eventual failure.

Prof. Bala noted that while buildings collapse everywhere in the world, incidents of avoidable collapse as a percentage of the total construction output are more prevalent in developing countries such as Nigeria. He listed causes of building collapse to include; design deficiencies, material deficiencies, managerial aspects, emergency factors among other numerous factors.


He posited that, “Unlike developed countries where there are clearly established procedures for the safe design and construction of buildings which are strictly adhered to, Nigeria is still grappling with a host of issues, including unqualified and poorly trained professionals and skilled workers, weak institutional controls and governance and quality issues around construction materials. The most important message is to develop mechanisms and strengthen institutions for ensuring that design, construction and operations best practices are reflected in the practices of built environment professionals in Nigeria.”

Earlier in her address, the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Valerie Nnodu described the world environment day set aside by the UN general assembly as a clarion call to all and sundry for a positive action on the environment. She noted that the celebration is a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution and global warming, to sustainable consumption, wildlife crime and replanting forests. She further noted that the sites of building collapse scattered across the length and breadth of the country are quite alarming and the effects on the building industry and the economy becomes unimaginable.



Efforts are in top gear to bequeath an ultra modern six rooms classroom Block to the University Staff Children School to take care of the increasing number of students enrolling into the school.

In a letter signed by the Chairman, Dr. Mbanefo Oghene of the Parents Teachers Council (PTC) of UNIZIK High School, he noted his resolve to make UNIZIK High School the best in Africa.

According to him, sponsors are welcome to sponsor the completion of the classroom building, as the building would be named after them.  No amount, he said, is too small, provided it can complete at least two rooms in the building.

Dr. Oghene thanked the VC for his assistance during the commissioning of the completed security post in the school, while calling for more synergy between the University Management and the Board of Governors of the High School.

He also commended parents of the pupils of the school for their personal commitments to the development of the school through levies and support.

he Chairman who declared his interest on youth empowerment programmes through intellectual development and empowerment, called on the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano to come and aid the school in the stated project.

Moreso, he said those who are willing to key into the project should do so through the Directorate of Information and Public Relations of the University.




The senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in their 184th meeting, elected her representatives in the 8th governing council. The election which was chaired by the vice chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS and held at the university auditorium was adjudged peaceful.


The election saw the senators nominating 14 persons of whom include

Prof. Charles Onyenekwe, Prof. Godson Okafor, Prof. Ngozi Anyikwa, Prof. Igwebuike Victor Onyiorah, Prof. Charles Nwadigwe, Prof. Tracie Utoh-Ezeajugh and Prof. Eric Ofoedu. Other nominees include Prof. C. C Ihueze, Prof. Ada Omenyi, Prof. O. O Udemezue, Prof. Stan Udedi, Prof. Peter C Nnabude, Prof. Mmaduabuchi Dukor and Prof. Makodi Bierenu Nnabugwu.


The result of the election as casted by 262 senators saw Prof. Ngozi Anyikwa taking the lead with 133 votes, precedeeded by Prof. Peter Nnabude who got 112 votes; this was followed by Prof. Okwudili Udemezue who pulled 89 votes. There was a tie between Prof. Ada Omenyi and Prof. Stan Udedi as both pulled 88 votes each. This led to the chairman declaring a run-off to determine the 4th person.


At the end of the run-off where 162 senators participated, Prof. Ada Omenyi pulled 89 votes to defeat Prof. Stan Udedi who pulled 70 votes.

Hence, Professors Ngozi Anyikwa, Peter Nnabude, Okwudili Udemezue and Ada Omenyi stood elected to represent the senate in the 8th governing council of the university.

Earlier in his address shortly before the elections, Prof. Ahaneku stressed that the purpose of the senate meeting is to take key decisions that would propel the institution to enviable pedestal.

A second year student of the Department of Modern European languages, by name, Muomezie Loretta Chioma has been awarded a nine-month scholarship to study at the University of La Rioja, Logrono Spain, by the Spanish Foundation, Mujeres Por Africa. The award was facilitated by Dr. Purity Uchehukwu, and the Vice-Chancellor has congratulated the award recipient on this feat.



The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS has offered a dual appointment to Pharm. (Mrs.) Bruce, Stella Omokhefe as Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Traditional Medicine. The appointment is in addition to her existing appointment as a Pharmacist in the Medical Centre Annex, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Agulu.



The University Management has frowned at some Lecturers who usually hold lectures in the early hours on Fridays, which is contrary to the University policy that stipulates that all CEP lectures should commence by 3.00pm on Fridays.


The concerned lecturers are hereby warned to desist from this lawless act in order to carry every student along.




Prof. R. N. Oranu has donated 574 (five hundred and seventy four) textbooks and Journals (Local & International) covering all options in technical/technology & general education, for the enrichment of the Departmental libraries.


The donation was as a result of the affiliation with Prof. O. T. Ibeneme.

Prof. H. C. Maduka of the Department of Human Biochemistry, Nnewi Campus, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Panel, to review the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the proposed Enwhe Field Development Project in Yenagoa Local government Area of Bayelsa State and Ahooda and Abu/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC).



Time to Fort Care Specialist Medical Centre is set to partner with the University in the area of medical services.  They offer special care in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Internal Medicines.  Moreso, they offer free Ultra Sound Scan for pregnant women every Monday from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m.  The Centre is now registering for breast examination using breast lamp.  The private hospital is situated at No. 3 Ven. Ben Chuks Avenue, opposite Government House, Awka, along Enugu-Onitsha Express Way.

The following may apply for admission into the Postgraduate Diploma programmes:

  1. 1.1. Graduates from approved Universities who hold first degree classification with FCGPA of 1.50 and above on a 5point scale.

2.1.2.        Candidates from approved Polytechnics or Monotechnics who hold a Higher National Diploma with a minimum of Upper Credit.


The following may apply for admission into Masters Programmes:

  • Graduates from approved Universities who hold the appropriate degree in the proposed field of study with minimum FCGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale or a minimum of 60% for Universities that do not use FCGPA.
  • Holders of Postgraduate Diploma from recognized institutions with an FCGPA of 3.50 and above (on a 5 point scale).

Graduates from approved universities who hold Mastersdegree in the proposed field of study with minimum FCGPA of 3.50 on a 5 point scale or a minimum of 70% for universities that do not use the FCGPA


Candidates for any Postgraduate programme must possess a minimum of 5 credits including English Language and any four relevant subjects at one or two sittings from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or TCII(Faculty of Education only) based on the Departmental/Faculty and General University Requirements.

4.1      Postgraduate Diploma Programme(PGD)

Full-Time Postgraduate Diploma programme: minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of three (3) semesters. Part- Time: minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters

Note: For the Faculty of Engineering Professional PGD: Full-Time: minimum of 4 Semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters. Part-Time: minimum of six (6) Semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters

4.2    Master Degree Programmes

Full-Time Masters Degree programmes: minimum of three (3) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters. Part-time programme: minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters

4.3    Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme

Full-Time PhD programmes: minimum of six (6) semesters and a maximum of ten (10) semesters. Part-Time programme: minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of fourteen (14) semesters.

  • Click on “Create Account” to Create a new account,
  • Fill the form and click on “Submit”
  • An email will be sent to your box and a page indicating the successful creation of your profile will be displayed. Click on “click here”. You will be directed to the log in page.
  • Enter your username and password and click on “sign in”.
  • Follow the instruction on the page following each step as indicated to access the application form.
  • Click on Step one on the menu bar on your left to generate and print the (Remita Retrieval Reference) Number for the ICT Fee (N1, 000).
  • Click on Step two on the menu bar on your left to generate and print the (Remita Retrieval Reference) Number for the Application Fee (N10, 000).
  • Take the RRR to any bank of your choice for payment of Application Fee and ICT Fee.

To confirm payment:

  • Click on step three. Type the RRR for the ICT Fee in the RRR textbox and click on “Confirm”. Again, type in the RRR for the Application fee in the RRR textbox and click on “Confirm”
  • Once the confirmation for the two payments is successful, you can proceed to step four to fill your application form
  • Click on step four. Fill and submit online the completed Application Form, scanning and attaching the claimed certificates, including O’level certificates.

5.2    Print the completed Application Form for your personal use. You will require this document in the course of the admission and registration.

5.3    Download and print a copy of the Transcript Request Form. The Transcript Request Form should be sent to your former Institution for your academic transcripts. Any change of name should be indicated in the transcript form.

5.4    Applicants should include the names, phone number and e-mail addresses of two Referees. At least one of the referees must be Academics not lower than the rank of Senior Lecturer.

5.5    Sale of Form Ends on 4th August, 2017.

Submission of Form Ends on 11th August, 2017.

Transcripts should be forwarded to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies not later than 25th August, 2017.

5.6    PhD applicants in submitting their forms, shall upload a proposal of not more than five type-written pages that should include:

  1. Topic (not more than 18 words)
  2. Brief background of the Study
  3. Aim and Objectives/Purpose
  4. Methodology
  5. Expected Outcomes
  6. References                .

5.7    Qualified Applicants will be invited for Screening Test and Proposal Defence (PhD only) from 28th August, 2017.

Colleagues, friends and staff of the University gathered at the University Auditorium to bid goodbye to late Dr. Ifedioramma Dike during a commendation service on Wednesday, 7th June, 2017.


In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS represented by the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Anayo Nkamnebe commiserated with the family embers of late Dr. Dike and stated that death is a gateway to eternity and not an end.


During the homily, Rev. Leo Onwuzuligbo described death as a receptionist that ushers us in to see God and render account of our deeds while on earth.  Rev. Onwuzuligbo urged all present to endeavour to meet God by making the utmost use of the death and resurrection of Christ who defeated death and absorbed our sins.


Chairman, Academic Staff Union of University, Prof. Dennis Anbodo expressed sincere condolences of the union and stated that late Dr. Dike laid indelible mark in his field both within and outside our University.


In a vote of thanks, son of late Dr. Dike, Mr. Ugochukwu Dike on behalf of the family thanked all that participated in his father’s commendations service.  He described his father as a man of peace who imparted positively on people and contributed to the growth of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts.



nasu loses member

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), UNIZIK lost one of their members, Mr. Ezewude Sylvanus of the Security Department.  He will be buried on Friday, 30th June, 2017 at his hometown, Amugo Village, Awgbu in Orumba North LGA, Anambra State.


N/B:  All NASU members are required to attend en masse; they are expected to gather in front of CEP Building (Opposite Faculty of Education).


Man ‘O’ War Loses Member

The man ‘O’ War Nigeria, Anambra State Command has announced the demise of one of its members, Prince Udunna Nwafor-Orizu who died on 8th February, 2017 after a brief illness.  Burial arrangement will be communicated later.
