The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering recently organized a Lecture Series aimed at highlighting the relevance and opportunities available to graduates of the discipline in today’s industrial landscape.

The lecture, themed “The Place of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Graduates in Industry,” was delivered by distinguished guest speakers, including Prof. Ikechukwu C. Ezema Ike-Eze, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Engr. Eric Oguama of TotalEnergies Nigeria.

The speakers emphasized the growing demand for metallurgical and materials engineers across various sectors, particularly in manufacturing, oil and gas, energy, and emerging technology industries.

The HOD, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Engr. Dr. Kingsley Nnakwo, had earlier welcomed participants to the programme and expressed his profound appreciation to all distinguished guests, staff, students, and stakeholders for their presence and continued support.
In his remarks, he emphasized the Department’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, practical training, and research-driven innovation. He noted that the field of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering remains pivotal to national development, particularly in areas of industrialization, manufacturing, infrastructure, and technological advancement.

In a remarkable show of commitment to academic excellence and student welfare, the Department awarded scholarships to eleven indigent but brilliant students. A total sum of ₦1.1 million was presented to cover their tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic session, thereby easing their financial burden and encouraging continued academic dedication.

The event also celebrated academic excellence among graduating students. The Best and First-Class graduating student of the Department for the 2024/2025 academic session received a cash award of ₦100,000 in recognition of outstanding academic performance.

In addition, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie congratulated the first-class graduate with a token gift of ₦50,000, further underscoring the University’s culture of rewarding excellence.

Furthermore, Prof. P. K. Igbokwe presented a one-time Legacy Award of ₦100,000 to the best-performing female graduate of the Department for the 2024/2025 academic session, in a commendable effort to promote and recognize female excellence in engineering.

The Lecture Series and award presentations collectively reinforced the Department’s commitment to industry relevance, academic distinction, and inclusive excellence.
