Digital Library Upgrade Enhances CBT Exams at UNIZIK.

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has recorded significant improvements in its digital library facilities, greatly enhancing the experience of students undertaking computer-based examinations.

Speaking during an interview with officials of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), the Director of the Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), Professor Ike Onyenwe, attributed the development to the support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie.

According to him, the digital library previously faced challenges such as overcrowding and insufficient functional computers, making examinations stressful for both students and staff.

“Before now, the environment was not conducive to computer-based examinations such as GS and CSC courses,” he said. He further disclosed that only about 380 computers were functional when he assumed office—far below what was needed for the growing student population.
He noted that recent upgrades have transformed the facility into a more efficient and student-friendly environment. The centre can now accommodate over 500 students simultaneously, with improved system stability and minimal technical disruptions, boasting over 500 functional computers.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director of General Studies, Professor Ebele Ojukwu, confirmed the improvements, stating that issues such as system glitches and interruptions during exams have been effectively addressed.

“These challenges are now a thing of the past,” she said, adding that the new system has significantly improved the conduct of computer-based tests. She commended the UNIZIK management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, for its proactive approach.

In her contribution, an invigilator, Dr. Lizzy Anierobi of the Department of Educational Management and Policy, also praised the effectiveness of the new system, noting that it has made examination supervision much easier.

Medical support has also been integrated into the examination process. A healthcare officer, Ebuka Emmanuel, disclosed that medical personnel are stationed at the venue to respond promptly to any emergencies involving students during examinations.

Some students have expressed satisfaction with the improved system. One of them, Ogbalimgba Chisom Lilian, described the examination process as smooth and well-organized, particularly praising the ease of verification and check-in procedures. She, however, appealed to the university management to extend similar digital infrastructure upgrades to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences campus in Agulu, so students there can also benefit without traveling to the Awka campus.

The development marks a significant step in UNIZIK’s ongoing efforts to modernize its academic infrastructure and improve service delivery for both students and staff.
