CPE 102 OBSERVATION AND ASSESSMENT OF YOUNG CHILDREN
This course focuses on the systematic method of observing and recording the growth and development of young children ages 2-11 in an early childhood care and educational settings-child care Centre, nursery and elementary schools. It provides an opportunity for students to learn a variety of observation techniques and to use these tools to increase their understanding of young children in the various domains of development-emotional, social, cognitive, motor, language, and creative tendencies.
CPE 106 THE NIGERIAN CHILD
This course exposes students to the rights of the child, who the child is with a particular reference to Nigeria, the convention on the rights of the child, issues on the rights of the child, child protection, child abuse and neglects, child labour, violation on the rights of the child, as well as the status of thee child in Nigeria especially the educational and the emotional status.
CPE 111 INTRODUCTION TO PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on exposing children on the importance of primary education, the meaning and the importance of primary education, history of primary education, management of primary education, funding, problems, strategies in repositioning primary education, UBE scheme, philosophy of primary education, qualities of primary school teachers and the implication of the role of the teacher for effective teaching and learning.
CPE 123 MATHEMATICS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on the fundamental concepts on which higher order concepts are built such as number and numeration, basic operation and fractions, while numbers, roman numerals etc. Emphasis is on problem solving with real number, patterns and relationship.
CPE 121 MEASUREMENT AND SHAPES
This course exposes students to various shapes and kinds of measurements. The course also addresses the basic geometrical construction, shapes and properties, transformation, location and visualization. Developing measurement concepts and skills, measuring length, measuring area, volume and capacity, weight and mass, time and angles. Students will also learn to estimate measures and develop formulas for area, and volume. Emphasis is placed to a great extent on solving problems.
CPE 162 SCIENCE IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course provides an overview of science concept; the basic scientific processes such as observing, classifying, communicating, measuring, predicting and inferring. The course also focuses on the integrated scientific processes. These includes, identifying and controlling variables, formulating and testing hypothesis, interpreting data. Experimenting as well as constructing models. Emphasis on detailed definition of each concept through the process-oriented inquiry method of teaching science.
CPE 171 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL STUDIES
This course introduces students to man’s interaction with his environment. Looks at the meaning of nature, scope evaluation and development of social studies in Nigerian schools. Examines how people influence their environment and how the environment affects the development of science and technology, population, environmental studies, population movements, urbanization and theory attendant problems. Addresses the inter-ethnic relationship.
CPE 173 PRIMARY RELIGIOUS AND MORAL EDUCATION
The course covers the concept of morals and moral education, agents of moral education, differences between moral and religion. Theories of moral development, Kohlberg’s stages of moral reasoning and Coral Gilligan’s theory etc.
CPE 182 PEACE EDUCATION
Students will be exposed to meaning of peace education, aims/objectives of peace education, conflict resolution, as well as meaning of citizen, difference between a citizen and a non-citizen, common ways of protecting the rights of citizens. Meaning and functions of government and its structure. Universal Declaration of Human Rights.(UDRH) etc.
CPE 191 PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH FOR PRIMARY TEACHER
This course examines fundamental movement, components activity areas in primary school education programme which include: Movement exploration and body mechanics, Stuarts, tumbling and gymnastics, Rhythmic activities, Simple games, Athletic and game skills, Relays, Physical fitness exercises and testing.
CPE 201 HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF PRE-PRIMARY AND PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on the objectives of Pre-primary and primary education in Nigeria. Reviews briefly the historical development of pre-primary education in Nigeria. Brings to knowledge the contribution of leading philosophers and educators to the development of pre-primary education. Examines the problems of pre-primary education in Nigeria and the relevance of pre-primary and primary education to the Nigeria cultural background.
CPE 204 PRINCIPLES OF /AND PRACTICUM IN ECPE
This course emphasizes field experience in childhood care and educational setting. It provides an opportunity for students to participate in field experience. Students will observe the normal stages of development of children from 2-11 years, and develop an understanding of how to respond to children’s needs by planning and implementing activities that are developmentally appropriate. Students will spend two hours each week during the semester observing specific areas of development in young children and participating in classroom activities.
CPE 214 ENGLISH FOR PRIMARY EDUCATION TEACHERS I
This course equips primary education teachers with the skills for effective teaching of the English language ranging from teaching speaking skills, listening skills to grammar. It focuses on rules of the English language, and introduces students to phonics, grammatical categories, reading and writing skills.
CPE 225 MATHEMATICS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on the base mathematics concepts which equip students with skills to tackle higher order tasks. Topics will include the study of sets, mathematical systems and number theory. Emphasis is placed on building concepts, theory, the use of models, manipulative and appropriate technology.
CPE 231 CHILDREN’S LITERATURE
This course is aimed at providing pre-reading experiences which will stimulate children’s desire to learn to read, providing opportunities for children to get acquainted with, handle, and ‘read’ a wide variety of high quality-children’s literature providing daily opportunities for each child to see, hear, and respond to well-prepared literature experiences. Students therefore should be exposed to pre-reading experiences- motivating children to develop the desire to read and have insatiable curiosity about what a word, page or volume says. Vocabulary enrichment, practice of letter sounds, blend sounds, words and rhymes should be taught. Culture-based literature books should be recommended for individual/cooperate reading (which promotes literature circle). Reasons why
poetry should be taught is important to be highlighted. Children should be given the opportunity to freely express themselves. They can tell their own story; listening to stories – it helps children develop listening skills.
CPE 241 CHILD PSYCHOLOGY
This course takes a global view of the different stages of child growth and development. Specifically, discusses the theories of development viz the cognitive development by Jean Piaget Moral theory of development by Lawrence Kohlberg. Psychosocial theory by Erik Erickson, and language development by Vigotsky (each theory cover from childhood to middle childhood). The course examines and discusses the environmental influence and problems as well as the educational implication associated with each stage.
CPE 242: PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
This course reviews behavior and the types of learning that help children improve cognitively. Course emphasis is on the constructive theory of learning by Piaget and Vygostk. Construction encourages student to actively participate in their own education course, develops in teachers the ability for using cooperation, discovery and generative learning techniques.
CPE 251 MANAGEMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD AND PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course emphasizes the administration and management in ECPE, the funding, the structure administration, the meaning and goals of administration and management, components of management, classroom management, management principles, and management of Centre as well as the problems of managing the centers etc.
CPE 253 HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
This course focuses on the partnership roles played by the home and the school in education of children. Emphasis is laid on the need for collaboration. Problems areas like communication, shared leadership, knowledge and skills development are treated too.
CPE 254: CURRICULUM PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT FOR ECPE
This course focuses on different conceptualization of curriculum. Concepts models and factors that influence curriculum planning. Meaning and steps in curriculum Development. Patterns of curriculum Organization. Teacher’s position in Curriculum planning development.
CPE 264 SCIENCE IN PRIMARY EDUCATION II
This course is an examination of curricular issues in the teaching of science – what how and why? Involves the use of different methods of teaching children science to acquire scientific knowledge, skills and attitudes. The course focuses on process – oriented inquiry which includes expository methodology, guided-inquiry methodology; inquiry methodology etc. emphasis is also placed on the use of appropriate instructional materials.
CPE 271: INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC
This course focuses on the concepts of music and rhythm, importance of music and rhythm, age and stages of music form, benefits of teaching music, piano skills, musical notations, musical instruments, musical toys etc.
CPE 273: SOCIAL STUDIES IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on Social Studies as a subject aimed at inculcation of national consciousness and national unity, imbibing the right type of values and attitudes for self and national survival. It teaches the acquisition of necessary skills, abilities and competences which individuals need to be able to contribute to national development. To achieve these aims, students should be exposed to the origin and nature of man, man in his environment (physical, social and economic activities). Students should be exposed to his environment (physical, social and economic activities). Students should be exposed to the curriculum of social studies, human resources in social studies, teaching aids and methods of teaching social studies, improvisation of social studies teaching materials, methods of evaluation in social studies. Man and his government, Nigeria as a nation, dynamics of group behaviours, environmental studies, Nigerian constitution and political life, religion in society and contemporary public issues; issues and problems of national development, science and technology in society, social services in Nigeria, citizenship education, socialization, Africa in world politics, social change in Nigeria, colonialism and neo-colonization.
CPE 274: CREATIVE ARTS AND DRAWING IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on creativity and Arts in the development of the young child.an overview of how children of different ages express their creativity and what caregivers should do to encourage them, benefits of Arts in Early Childhood and stages in artistic development. Students are expose to practical art work with emphasis on creativity.
CPE 281: BASIC AGRICULTURE, TOOLS AND PRACTICES
This course focuses on the concept of agriculture, basic knowledge of agriculture, the role of government in agricultural development, general principles and climate conditions that affect agriculture. Addresses agriculture machinery and tools, and maintenance. It also involves field experiences.
CPE 305: THEORIES AND PRACTICES OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
This focuses on the discussion critique and application of conceptual framework of early childhood education theories- cognitive theories- Piaget, Montessori, social and cultural theories- Vsygogyetc, and psychosocial theories.
CPE 311: TEACHING IGBO IN PRE- PRIMARY AND PRIMARY EDUCATION
Students will be exposed to basic language skills. Emphasis will be focused on the concept of language arts, listening skills, speaking skills, writing and reading skills and methods of teaching the skills.
CPE 321: TECHNOLOGY BASED MATHEMATICS FOR TEACHERS
This course focuses on technology and the mathematics. The course emphasizes the acquisition of basic concept and skills of computer operations, the use of calculator and computer software, including internet-based applications/applets in helping children to learn mathematics, the computer as a tool in mathematics, electronic manipulative for numeration, instructional software as well as surfing and using mathematics education resources on the internet.
CPE 325: METHOD OF TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
This course focuses on the use of counters, pictures, objects, games etc to teach the basic concepts in mathematics such as numbering and numeration, learning to write numbers and mathematical signs in tens, hundred etc teacher guided lesson are emphasized. This also course focuses on procedures and processes of teaching mathematics in primary schools with emphasis on teachers shifting from a teacher – centered to a child-centered approach in their instructions. For example, shifting away from mere memorizing procedures towards mathematical reasoning and shifting away from the teacher as sole authority for right answers towards logic and mathematical reasoning and evidence as verification. The course emphasize on the six standards talk about the worthwhile mathematics as well as drills of efficient method such as strategies for addition facts, subtraction facts, multiplication facts and division facts. While the standards, talk about the worthwhile mathematics tasks, teacher’s role in discourse, students’ role in discourse, tools for enhancing discourse, learning environment and analysis of teaching and learning.
CPE 331: DIAGNOSIS AND REMEDIATION OF READING DIFFICULTIES
This course emphasizes reading as a very important leaner-activity in the learning process. The learner’s ability to read meaningfully and fluently too, determines how the information relayed is grasped. This course therefore is designed to equip students with the necessary skills that would enable them diagnose and remediate the different types of reading difficulties encountered by children. Students should be exposed to the factors/reasons for failure in reading. Students should be taught important operational procedures diagnosticians use to make diagnosis. Specifically, students should be taught diagnosis and remediation of letter knowledge and sight words, words analysis skills, comprehensive, vocabulary development and study skills. Students should be exposed to diagnosis and remediation of psychological and sociological problems, physical abilities of the eye, ear, speech problems and severe reading disabilities. Students should be exposed to the use of reading inventories, analysis of oral reading errors, use of interviews, record keeping and writing case reports in remedial reading; and interpreting test and research results in reading.
CPE 333: STRATEGIES AND MATERIALS FOR TEACHING READING
This course aims at training students to read for information. It specifically teaches strategies that should be applied before reading, during reading and after reading. Students should be exposed to targeted reading skills while applying reading strategies such as dense questioning, inferential reading, key concept synthesis, frame of reference etc. Teacher should highlight the ,materials needed for teaching reading such as book materials, pictorials, charts etc.
CPE 341 BASIC CONCEPT OF MONTESSORI
The course explains the circumstances of Maria Montessori career that influenced her educational methods. Examine and critiques the basic characteristics of a good Montessori programme. Identifies and describes those features of the prepared environment unique to the Montessori Method. Addresses the role of the teacher in the Montessori house. The Montessori Instructional materials is also discussed. How Montessori Method can or cannot meet the basic needs of children as well as the ways the Montessori system could be adopted to a regular classroom setting.
CPE 355: STUDIES IN PRIMARY EDUCATION CURRICULUM
The students will be exposed to the conceptual and theatrical concepts of curriculum development, difference between curriculum planning and development, theories of authorities in curriculum development like Plato, Froebel, Montessori, Rousseau, Piaget, and Dewey as well as be exposed to determinants of curriculum.
CPE 375: FAMILY EDUCATION AND VALUES
Focus is on the basic concepts of the family, family structure in traditional and modern times, roles of parents, family life, parental styles, communication patterns etc
CPE 391: HEALTH AND LIVING IN SOCIETY
This course focuses on health in the society. Emphasize how man applies himself in his society to achieve health, e.g personnel hygiene, environmental hygiene, diseases and their preventive measures, balanced diet etc. Keeping the environment safe from pollution and stresses need for healthy lifestyles. Teaches strategies for coping with/avoiding stress.
CPE 401: MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVE IN TEACHING
This course studies the influence of diversity on teaching and learning in a democratic and multi-cultural society like Nigeria with a philosophy of equal opportunities without any form of discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, religion and physical exceptionality.
CPE 411: DEVELOPMENT OF WRITING SKILLS
This course is aimed at developing writers. To be able to achieve this, students would be exposed to the mechanics of writing such as word choice, word economy, wordiness, roots, affixes, dialect, slangs, use of imageries, sentence variety, fragments, run-ons etc. students should be exposed to writing of fictions, non-fictions, poetry. Students should be exposed to the three approaches teachers use to help children develop writing skills-traditional approach, readiness approach and natural approach. Students be exposed to the three writing developmental level of children, and children’s developmental spelling, drawing experience, play and writing and expose to books.
CPE 412: LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS
This course focuses on equipping students with skills for effective communication both in speech and writing. It as a result, focuses on phonics and common grammatical errors found in the use of the English Language. Students should be exposed to phonemes, phonetics symbols, consonants sounds, consonants clusters and blends single consonants and diagraphs, points of articulation and shape of the lips, schwa sound, diphthongs, allophones, syllabication and accent. Students should also be exposed to the common errors in the application of grammatical rules found in expressions and writing. The teachers should cover as many as possible all the ungrammatical usage of all the grammatical categories ranging from parts of speech, punctuation marks, determiners to articulation of sounds (speech).
CPE 415: ENGLISH FOR PRIMARY TEACHER II
This course is designed to expose students to the rules of grammar in English Language. These rules govern everyday usage in the language. Students should be exposed to the English Language curriculum for Early Childhood and Primary Education. Students should be taught the different parts of speech-nouns, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction and exclamation mark. With the exception of exclamation, students should be exposed to different syntactic positions of occurrence in sentence structures and their types. Students should be taught punctuations marks – use of full stop, question mark, exclamation mark, capital letter, comma, apostrophe, dash, colon, semi-colon, hyphen, quotation marks and bracket. The usage of the above mentioned punctuation marks should be taught vocabulary building, idioms and essay writing. Use of determiners should also be taught.
CPE 422: ICT IN PRIMARY EDUCATION CLASSROOM
The course covers the study of concepts, types and instructional values of ICT in primary education, justification for teaching young children ICT skills and capabilities; examinations of various ways in which ICT can support subject learning; planning for ICT and organizing the learning environment. Effort will be made to expose student – teacher to the instructional use of ICT facilities especially white board and computer (Computer Assistant Learning–CAL)
CPE 432: CONTENT AREA READING
This course emphasizes that every subject area has specific/peculiar reading strategies that best facilitate grasping of information for learners. This course is designed to equip students with strategies that can apply to the different subjects for better comprehension. The teacher should expose students to framework for content reading instruction, impact of affect on reading, determining readers background for content material, building the reader’s background, assisting reading by setting purposes, assisting the reader develop comprehensive, reflecting on learning through critical thinking, teaching vocabulary through PAR, supporting at-risk readers amongst others.
CPE 441: ELEMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCTION
This course is an introduction to child care services for young childrenA with special needs. Description of special needs and characteristics of young children with special needs. This course will provide knowledge and skills required for collaborative special education services. It will also discuss current issues in exceptionality including the management of autism; inclusion in nursery and primary schools; the gifted child etc. it will also explore family and community resources that support children with special needs.
CPE 442: CHILD CARE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
This course focuses on principles and practices of quality early childhood care giving. Emphasis is on the relationship between childhood development and the typical condition that foster development of security, confidence and identity in early childhood. The roles of the care-giver is also emphasized.
CPE 443: GUIDING CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOUR
This course focuses on discipline, punishment and guidance. Planning for guidance in the classroom- preventing behavior problem, strategies for guiding behavior, behavior management system- classer model, Ginnot Model, Dreikin’s Model and assessing behavior model system.
CPE 445: SEMINAR IN CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT
This focuses on practical presentation papers by the students. Emphasis is on skills on paper presentation and knowledge of work presented.
CPE 447: COMPARATIVE RELIGION IN SCHOOLS
This course is aimed at developing sound moral ethics in learners; which will help them grow to be responsible citizens co-existing peacefully with people of other religion. The teacher is expected to teach learners the beliefs of different religion and their practices. These are to be done in details. The course should cover as many religions of the world as possible. Based on the background knowledge gathered by learners, the teacher can make comparison, discussing differences and similarities. The teacher is expected to pick certain sensitive moral issues in the society and discuss based on the beliefs of the different religion.
CPE 456: HAND-ON TOY PRODUCTION
This is a practical oriented course designed to guide students to create instructional and dramatic materials. The emphasis is on creativity which assess the student’s ability to create play/instructional materials in problem-solving (in form of teaching or drama) in the classroom. The materials include toys such as animals, dolls, cars, cars, puppet like finger puppet, animal purposes, father Christmas, fire fighters, Humpty Dumpty etc.
CPE 493: CARING FOR OUR PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
This course emphasizes the need for improving the aesthetic dimension of our environment.
