THEME: MANAGING NIGERIA ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION: LESSONS FROM OTHER CLIMES

LEAD PAPER PRESENTER: MR. ISAAC OKOROAFOR (DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATION, CBN)

KEY NOT SPEAKER: DR ABRAHAM NWANKWO (FORMER DIRECTOR-GENERAL, DEBT MANAGEMENT OFFICE, ABUJA)

OBJECTIVES:

Nigeria has the potential to become a major player in the global economy by virtue of its human and natural resources endowment. This potential has remained relatively untapped over the years because of over-reliance on the downstream sector of the economy. The growth of Nigeria has continued to be driven by consumption and high oil prices. Previous economic policies left the country ill-prepared for the collapse of crude oil prices and production. The structure of the economy remains highly import dependent, consumption driven and undiversified. The central question in the minds of Nigerians today is: What is government doing to pull the economy out of the present situation? Tough time requires tough and bold actions. This is where economic diversification comes in with the aim of restoring growth and macroeconomic stability, industrialization, Agriculture, Powe sector, energy flow, investing in our people, infrastructural development as well as building a competitive economy.

The conference is therefore a critical effort towards bringing together scholars, researchers and policy makers from all fields of endeavour to search for ideas and proffer solutions to the problem and challenges associated with diversification and lessons from other countries. The conference will be underpinned by the need to generate strong advocacy capable of helping individuals, firms, institutions and Government to pull through the economic stronghold of managing diversification.
