International Women’s Day: UNIZIK Partners with Irene Menakaya School, Onitsha to Train Pupils in Musical Performance.
In commemoration of International Women’s Day coming up on Sunday, 8 March, 2026, the Department of Music, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, partnered with Irene Menakaya School, Onitsha, Barr. Juni & Irene Menakaya Foundation International, and the United Nations African Women to host a conference and musical training session for pupils.
The event, which took place on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Irene Menakaya School, Onitsha, Anambra State, focused on empowering young minds through music, education, and mentorship.
As part of the collaboration, pupils of the school received practical training in musical performance, aimed at nurturing their creative talents and exposing them to opportunities within the performing arts.
Speaking during the event, the Head of the Department of Music, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Pastor Dr. Ikedimma Okeke, explained that the initiative is designed to inspire and guide young pupils who may wish to pursue careers in music and the performing arts.
He noted that the programme aligns with the career development vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, which emphasizes mentorship, talent discovery, and skill development among young people.
The enthusiastic pupils were trained by the leader of the renowned “Oyomma” Maiden Dance Troupe of the Department of Music, Miss Celine Chinecherem Ogbu, a Year Two student of the department, who guided them through dance and musical performance techniques.
Other speakers at the conference delivered insightful talks on general health, women’s health, and career choices, encouraging the pupils to develop confidence, discipline, and ambition in pursuing their dreams.
Highlights of the event included cultural displays, dance performances, musical presentations, and award recognitions, making the celebration both educational and entertaining for the participants.
