The much anticipated crystal anniversary of UNIZIK 94.1 FM, will hold today.
All roads will lead to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Auditorium for the celebration of the 15th year of existence of UNIZIK Fm as a Radio Broadcasting outfit.
The epoch event which will be under the chairmanship of High Chief Kenneth Ifekudu, OFR, Agbalanze Onyekachukwu na Ozubulu, CEO, Diamond Leeds Ltd will commence by 11 a.m.
Special Guest of Honour is Mrs Nonye Soludo, wife of the Executive Governor of Anambra State while His Majesty, Chidubem Iweka, Eze Obosi the third is the Royal Father of the day.
The Station will during the occasion honour Professor Charles Esimone FAS, for all he has done for the station while 5 persons including Very Rev Prof Bonachristus Umeogu, former Dean Faculty of Arts, Hon. Lady Maureen Chinwe Gwacham, Member representing Oyi/ Ayamelum Federal Constituency, Prof Lilian Orogbu, Member representing Awka North/ South Federal Constituency, Architect Chukwudi Ezenwa, Chairman GSS Group of companies will be installed as patrons of the Station while High Chief Emmanuel Odoh, Managing Director, Epo Oil and Gas ltd/ Mega Choice Homes and Properties will be presented with Philanthropic Excellence award.
It could be recalled that UNIZIK FM Radio came into existence in 2007 with the approval of the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ilochi Okafor after obtaining the official Radio License from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) through the then head of department, Dr Kate Omenugha now Prof. Kate Omenugha who initiated the take-off of the Fm and later became it’s first Director.
The Radio which commenced official broadcast in April 2008 was commissioned in Nov 2009.
The Radio Station gained more grounds when Prof Kate Omenugha led them to achieve the status of the “2013 Campus Radio Station of the Year” by the Nigeria Broadcasters Merit Award (NBMA). and was also officially admitted as the 16th Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Chapter.
Another remarkable milestone for the Radio Station was in early 2017 when the then Director and first Female Professor of Mass Communication in sub-saharan Africa, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna endowed a building now housing the Station comprising a Radio and production studios, Blocks of Offices and Mini-Conference hall to enhance the station’s profile
The station grew in leaps and bounds through quality educative and entertaining programmes as the Broadcast Communication expert, Prof. Ifeoma Dunu, the current director, and the Station Manager Ify Obi brought in their wealth of experience to move the Station to a higher level.
The coming on board of Prof. Charles Esimone’s administration with his ‘Project 200’ vision was another remarkable moment as the station was fully involved in the scheme of the University administration being up to speed with almost all administrative and academic activities within the University and beyond.
Prof Esimone helped nib to the board some of the pressing challenges of the station which included power supply, accommodation, mobility and essential equipment needed for the smooth running of the station.
The station although with some challenges which are fund-related continues to live up to expectations amongst the committee of Radio Stations in Nigeria. As the Radio Station celebrates her 15th year of existence, the management calls on her benefactors, friends and well-wishers to be part of this momentous occasion geared towards repositioning this broadcasting outfit for growth and development.
