Molecular Research Lab Identifies Key Challenges, Commends UNIZIK VC’s Support
The staff of the Molecular Research Laboratory of Nnamdi Azikiwe University paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, to discuss the activities, achievements, and challenges of the laboratory.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Coordinator of the Laboratory, Prof. Nneka Agbakoba, explained that the Molecular Research Laboratory was established to support teaching, research, and scientific innovation within the University. She noted that the laboratory was also designed to attract international research collaborations and strengthen the institution’s capacity in molecular and biomedical research.
Prof. Agbakoba commended the Vice-Chancellor for the support already extended to the laboratory but pointed out several operational challenges currently affecting its effectiveness. These include the absence of a functional solar power system, inadequate basic equipment, and a shortage of technologists needed for smooth operations. She stressed that stable electricity is particularly crucial in a molecular laboratory because of the sensitive nature of the research activities and equipment used in the facility.
In his response, Prof. Anyaehie appreciated the delegation’s visit and commended the staff for their dedication and contributions toward advancing research within the University. He acknowledged the strategic importance of the Molecular Research Laboratory to the institution’s academic and research development, noting that research remains a vital factor in global university competitiveness.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the team to develop a strategic action plan outlining practical steps toward improving and expanding the laboratory’s operations. According to him, with proper planning and collaboration, the laboratory can evolve into a functional research hub capable of attracting partnerships, securing grants, and generating revenue that can be reinvested into the development of the University.
Prof. Anyaehie further emphasised the need for collective commitment among staff members toward building a stronger and globally competitive institution.
Other members of the delegation included Somadina Okwelogu, Ogbuojebe Chinedu, Oruchi Nelson, and Anagboso Ikenna.
