The Pre-Degree Unit of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, on Friday, June 5, 2026, organised an orientation programme for students at its Pre-Degree Centre, Mbaukwu, to prepare them for a successful academic session.

The orientation, themed “Career Exploration and Goal Setting,” focused on equipping students with the mindset and tools needed to navigate the programme successfully and make informed career decisions.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, represented by a member of the Governing Council representing Senate, Prof. Pius Okoye, stated that the orientation was designed to ease students into the demands of the Pre-Degree programme. He disclosed that the Mbaukwu campus is gradually transforming from a mini-campus into a full campus, with plans underway to relocate the JUPEB programme to the site.

Prof. Anyaehie stressed the importance of effective time management and reminded students that admission into the university depends solely on academic performance. He cautioned that they were not yet full undergraduates and therefore must remain focused and diligent to secure admission.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Pre-Degree Unit, Engr. Prof. Paul Okolie, reflected on his one year in office, outlining both challenges and achievements recorded at the centre. He identified poor lighting as a major challenge affecting movement at night but noted that remarkable progress had been made, including the installation of 100 solar-powered street lights, construction of kitchen and convenience facilities, and provision of water reticulation with shower systems.

Prof. Okolie further disclosed that following the Vice-Chancellor’s visit to the Igwe of Mbaukwu, the centre has officially been designated as a study campus of the university. He confirmed that the JUPEB programme would commence at the campus in September.

He urged students to remain focused and avoid examination malpractice, warning that paying money for admission into the university is illegal and punishable.

Also speaking was the Chairman of the Pre-Degree Programme Board and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Alex Asigbo, represented by Prof. Nwachukwu Obiakor, who encouraged students to take their studies seriously. He commended the staff of the Pre-Degree Unit for their dedication and noted that the university is on a steady path of growth and development.

Delivering the keynote lecture, the Guest Lecturer and Director of the Centre for Counselling and Career Development, Prof. Harry Obi Nwosu, emphasised the importance of career awareness beyond academic success. He urged students to distinguish themselves through excellence in their chosen fields.
“There is no small course in the university. Be the best at what you do, because excellence attracts honour and respect,” he said while discussing various career paths available to students.

Other speakers at the event included the Sub-Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Anthony Apiti, who delivered a motivational talk titled “Prescience to Greatness”; the Chief Safety Officer, Mr. Obi Collins, who addressed safety concerns; and Dr. Lucy Udedi, who represented the Director of the University Medical Centre and highlighted available health services. The traditional ruler of Mbaukwu was represented at the event by the heir apparent, Prince Engr. Chukwuemeka Anugwu.

In her vote of thanks, the Deputy Director of the Pre-Degree Unit, Dr. Vivian Anakwenze, expressed appreciation to members of the university management for their support and urged students to maximise the opportunities provided by the programme.

The event also featured the presentation of cash rewards and medals to outstanding student-athletes who excelled in football and volleyball competitions.
