Nnamdi Azikiwe University has unveiled a new line of health-focused food products, including specially formulated herbal infusion teas and natural spices, in a move aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and wellness among Nigerians. The products—Sceenk Herbal Infusion Tea, Sceenk Zobo Plus Infusion Tea, alongside turmeric and ginger spices—were developed by a multidisciplinary research team within the institution.
Leading the innovation are Prof Nkiru Meludu and Prof Samuel Meludu, whose collaboration bridges agricultural production and biomedical science. According to the researchers, the herbal teas are rich in antioxidants and are designed to support disease prevention, regulate blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and improve throat, gut, and overall immune health. The Sceenk Zobo Plus Infusion Tea is also formulated to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support heart health.
The turmeric and ginger spices, also launched as part of the initiative, are positioned as natural dietary supplements with anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to metabolic balance and general wellbeing. The developers emphasized that the products are entirely herbal-based and tailored to assist in the prevention and management of common lifestyle-related conditions, particularly hypertension and blood sugar imbalances.
University officials described the development as a significant step in translating academic research into practical solutions that directly benefit society. The initiative aligns with the institution’s broader commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, and community health advancement.
With this launch, UNIZIK joins a growing list of Nigerian universities leveraging research outputs to address public health challenges, while also creating opportunities for local production, job creation, and economic growth.
