SABRUD Consortium Proposes Mini-Grid Power Solution to UNIZIK.
An energy development firm, SABRUD CONSORTIUM, has proposed the introduction of a mini-grid power system to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as part of efforts to strengthen its existing partnership with the institution and improve electricity supply within the university environment.
The proposal was made on Friday, 19th June, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, by the management of the company.
Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SABRUD Consortium, Engr. Chiso Nwangwu, said the mini-grid initiative is designed to generate and distribute power efficiently across the university campus, including student hostels, and business premises within the institution.
He explained that the project would provide a practical solution to energy challenges through the deployment of smart meters and sub-metering systems, enabling users to monitor their electricity consumption and payments more effectively.
Engr. Nwangwu urged the university management to embrace the initiative, noting that it would not only enhance power supply but also strengthen the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between them and Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
In the Vice-Chancellor’s response, Professor Anyaehie, acknowledged the proposal as a welcome development, while noting that the university already operates a solar power system that requires proper maintenance.
He expressed the institution’s willingness to explore the mini-grid solution as part of efforts to improve energy efficiency and reliability on campus.
The Vice-Chancellor also emphasised the importance of capacity building, urging the company to involve students of the university’s Faculty of Engineering in its operations.
He encouraged SABRUD CONSORTIUM to provide hands-on training for students, particularly in the manufacturing and management of metering systems.
According to him, such collaboration would ensure that both the university and the company work in mutual benefit while equipping students with practical skills relevant to the energy sector.
The delegation was accompanied during the visit by Prof. Stephen Ufoaro, the Chairman of the UNIZIK Electricity Committee.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties expressing readiness to deepen their partnership and work collaboratively towards sustainable energy solutions for the university community.
