UNIZIK Biosciences Faculty Holds 4th International Conference on Waste-to-Wealth Solutions.






The Faculty of Biosciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, on Wednesday, 13th May 2026, hosted its 4th Bioscience International Conference (Live/Virtual) at the ASUU Secretariat, Awka.
The conference, themed “Waste to Wealth: Bio-Based Solutions for Circular Economy,” brought together academics, researchers, industry stakeholders, students, and distinguished personalities to deliberate on innovative approaches to waste management and sustainable development.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie in an address described waste as a major challenge confronting Nigeria and emphasised the urgent need for proactive planning and sustainable solutions.
According to him, “Today, we are having an event, and there is waste. The question is, -what do we do with it? We must begin to plan for our waste.” He further noted that one of the core responsibilities of universities is to provide solutions to societal problems, stressing that the conference would only be meaningful if it contributed to solving challenges within society.
Earlier in his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences, Prof. Ken Udeh Ekwealor appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for finding time to attend the event and support the faculty.
Prof. Ekwealor stated that innovative waste processing has transformed the perception of waste from being seen as useless materials to valuable resources capable of creating jobs, generating income, and protecting the environment. He explained that by converting waste into useful products such as compost, energy, and reusable materials, communities can reduce pollution while promoting sustainable economic development.
He further noted that the event also featured award presentations to distinguished sons and daughters of the land who have made remarkable positive impacts on humanity and society through philanthropy and community development.
Among dignitaries present at the conference were Senator Princess Adaeze Oduah, Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo (Onye Ndozi), Mr. Chidi Ameze, alongside professors, doctors, members of staff, and students of the university.
