UNIZIK Emerges Among 10 Universities Piloting NUC’s Blueprint ICT Development Project
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has achieved another landmark in its pursuit of digital excellence, having been selected by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as one of only ten Nigerian universities to pilot the Blueprint ICT Development Project, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming higher education through technology-driven innovation.
The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the NUC and Chairman of the Project Implementation Committee (PIC), Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, during the Committee’s inaugural meeting held on Monday in Abuja. He disclosed that the project is currently being implemented in ten carefully selected universities and that the successes recorded in the pilot phase will serve as the foundation for its eventual expansion to other institutions across the Nigerian University System (NUS).
Professor Ribadu explained that the Blueprint ICT Development Project, which is supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), is designed to ensure that its benefits and transformative impact are felt across the entire university system by strengthening Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development and enhancing the collective capacity of Nigerian universities.
As a flagship initiative of the Federal Government, implemented through the NUC, the project seeks to modernise university education by strengthening digital infrastructure, expanding ICT capacity, automating institutional processes, enhancing e-learning platforms, and equipping both academic and non-teaching staff with advanced digital competencies required for twenty-first-century higher education.
For Nnamdi Azikiwe University, participation in the pilot programme represents another major endorsement of its commitment to digital transformation and institutional excellence. The initiative is expected to accelerate ongoing reforms in digital administration, smart teaching and learning, research collaboration, and ICT-driven governance, while further enhancing the University’s capacity to deliver world-class education, research, innovation, and community service.
The University’s inclusion in the prestigious pilot programme also reflects the bold and visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, whose administration has continued to prioritise digital innovation, research excellence, smart campus development, and strategic international collaborations as essential pillars for repositioning UNIZIK among globally competitive universities.
According to the NUC, the pilot universities are expected to establish best practices and implementation models that will guide the nationwide rollout of the Blueprint ICT Development Project. UNIZIK’s participation therefore places the University among the institutions that will shape the future of digital higher education in Nigeria.
This latest achievement further consolidates Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading centres of learning, research, and innovation, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to embracing technology as a catalyst for academic excellence, institutional efficiency, and sustainable national development.
It will be recalled that Nnamdi Azikiwe University secured the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) ICT Infrastructure Upgrade Project valued at US$3.3 million during the 2024 National Competition cycle. The successful bid was championed by a distinguished team of academics led by Professor Kenneth Ngwoke, and comprising Professor C.C. Ihueze, Professor Ikechukwu Onyenwe, Professor Alex Asigbo, Professor Tracie Uto-Ezeajughi, Professor Azubuike Aniedu, Professor Cordelia Ebenebe, Professor Chinedu Onyeizugbe, and Professor Uche Ekpunobi.
The landmark achievement, which laid the foundation for the University’s participation in the NUC Blueprint ICT Development Project, stands as a testament to the team’s exceptional intellectual capacity, strategic foresight, innovation, and collaborative spirit. Their success attracted significant international investment to the University and continues to drive the transformation of UNIZIK’s ICT infrastructure and digital ecosystem.
