UNIZIK Hosts Google Mapping Training, 22 Students to Receive Some Stipends

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has commenced a two-month intensive Google Mapping Training Programme aimed at equipping participants with practical digital mapping and geospatial skills.
The training, organized by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in collaboration with Dezachi Oil & Gas Company Nigeria Limited and Bruce Integrated Nigeria Limited, began on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the MICTU Software Factory of the University.
The programme is designed to enhance participants’ technical capacity in field data collection, GIS mapping, geolocation accuracy, and digital mapping using Google platforms, preparing them for real-world mapping operations across various project environments.
Representing the Director of the Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), Prof. Ike Onyenwe, the Head of the MICTU Software Factory, Mr. Sebastian Udeh, said the training is open to both students and non-students, and commended the University for providing an enabling environment for the initiative.
The Training Director and Coordinator of Google Maps in Anambra State, Mr. Sam Eyo, disclosed that 22 students will benefit from the programme and receive some stipends. He noted that the trainees will acquire hands-on experience in digital mapping, coordinate collection, map validation, editing, and submission of mapping outputs.
Also speaking, the Students’ Union President, Comrade Samuel Ochuba, described the training as timely and urged participants to take advantage of the opportunity to strengthen their digital and technical competence.
The initiative underscores UNIZIK’s commitment to digital innovation and capacity building, positioning students for emerging opportunities in the geospatial and technology-driven workforce.
