The Department of Chinese Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has hosted Nigeria’s first university-level Chinese Language Competition as part of efforts to assess and promote students’ proficiency in the language.

The competition, sponsored by Prof. Ifeanyi Odinye, a professor in the Department and its pioneer Head, brought together students who were tested in various aspects of the Chinese language. The event also featured the formal induction of new students into the department.

Held at the auditorium of the Chisco Institute, the programme equally highlighted the code of conduct expected of students for a successful academic programme in the department.

Speaking during the event, the sponsor, Prof. Ifeanyi Odinye explained that the friendly competition was designed to encourage the learning of the Chinese language. He expressed optimism that the initiative would become an annual event and eventually expand to other Nigerian universities.

Prof. Odinye also commended the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, for what he described as the renewed vision and positive direction of the institution.

In his remarks, the Director of the Confucius Institute, Prof. Yu Zhangbao praised Nnamdi Azikiwe University for being among the pioneer universities in Nigeria to establish a Department of Chinese Studies. He also appreciated the cordial relationship between the university and the Confucius Institute.

Earlier in her address, the Head of the Department, Dr. Chinenye Okoye advised the students to be mindful of the company they keep on campus and reminded them of the importance of adhering strictly to the rules and regulations of the university. She commended Prof. Odinye for sponsoring the competition and encouraged other members of the department and stakeholders to emulate the gesture.

Other academic staff present at the event included Prof. Anas Elochukwu; the Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute; Prof. Nkechinyere Nwokoye; Prof. Ifeoma Odinye; and Dr. Emmanuel Ozioko.

A major highlight of the competition was the presentation of cash prizes to outstanding students. Winners in each academic level—from first year to fourth year—received ₦30,000 for first place, ₦20,000 for second place, and ₦10,000 for third place, with a total of 12 students benefiting from the awards.
