UNIZIK PROF. JOEL IGBOKWE DELIVERS VALEDICTORY LECTURE.

The University community witnessed an intellectually enriching and memorable moment as Prof. Joel Igbokwe delivered his valedictory lecture on Friday, 27th March, 2026, marking the culmination of a distinguished and impactful academic career.

The lecture, titled “Geo-AI for Disaster Mapping and Response in Nigeria,” examined the transformative potential of geospatial technologies powered by artificial intelligence in addressing disaster management challenges across the country.

In his presentation, Prof. Igbokwe highlighted how the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Artificial Intelligence can significantly enhance early warning systems, strengthen disaster preparedness, and enable rapid, data-driven responses during emergencies such as flooding, erosion, and other environmental hazards prevalent in Nigeria.

He emphasized the urgent need for key stakeholders—including government agencies, researchers, and private organizations—to embrace Geo-AI-driven solutions to mitigate risks, save lives, and promote sustainable national development.

The valedictory lecture not only showcased Prof. Igbokwe’s immense contributions to academia and research but also served as a clarion call for innovation and collaboration in tackling Nigeria’s disaster management challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, was represented at the occasion by the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Emmanuel Obidimma.

The well-attended event drew several professors and members of the academic community, including emeritus professors Sam Omenyi and Rob Egwuatu; the Chairman of the University Inaugural Lecture Committee, Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu; the wife of the valedictory lecturer, Prof. Philomena Igbokwe; as well as Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, other professors, family members, and distinguished guests.

The citation of the valedictory lecturer was read by Prof. Ebele Emengini.

The ceremony was preceded by an academic procession, adding colour and prestige to the occasion.
