UNIZIK SUG POLLS: Comrade Ejikeme Emerges President-Elect

Comrade Francis Izuchukwu Ejikeme, a 300-level student of the Department of Educational Management and Policy, Faculty of Education has been declared winner and President-elect at the just concluded elections into the Students Union Government of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The election which was held virtually on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, recorded an unprecedented number of votes cast.

Comrade Ejikeme, who hails from Umuoji, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State polled a total of 2786 votes to beat four other opponents namely Ibemesi Stanley Chijioke (901 votes), Miss Amobi Pearl (795 votes), Eze Samuel (408 votes), and Ezekwe Chidubem Cornelius (309 votes).

In the same vein, Esther Onyinyechi Nwachukwu polled a total of 2357 votes to emerge as the Vice President defeating the duo of Esther Ifeoma Okafor (2191 votes) and Peace Munachimso Eweluka (630 votes).

Announcing the results, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone, FAS commended the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Chinonso Achebe for what he described as yet another great effort in sustaining the virtual conduct of the SUG elections spanning three (3) years now. In his words, “We’ve improved greatly in our ICT drive in this University and we are not relenting.

“We commend the students who are the major stakeholders in the University system for their cooperation. We are very keen to allowing transparency, credibility and fairness to thrive in this system. We take all the pain in conducting transparent elections such as this to avert having bad eggs lead the student body”.

While congratulating the winners and other contenders alike, Prof Esimone further commended the UNECO team, NANS and student representatives for their patience and commitment towards the success of the election.

In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Achebe expressed thanks to God for the smooth conduct of the election. According to him, “All we’ve done so far is to ensure this e-voting system is improved. You can attest to the fairness, credibility and transparency in the election”.

Prof Achebe urged the Federal Government and INEC to take a cue from UNIZIK.

The election Situation Room was monitored by members of NANS, staff members drawn across faculties and agents appointed by contestants.
