    UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor Encourages Students to Actively Participate in Sports.

    The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has encouraged students to actively participate in sports as a vital component of their overall development.
    He gave this advice on Friday, February 20, 2026, during the closing ceremony of the Students’ Sports Competition, popularly known as the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup, held at the Bakassi Sports Arena, UNIZIK.
    Prof. Anyaehie emphasized that sports play a crucial role in promoting physical fitness, mental alertness, discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills. He urged students to balance their academic pursuits with sporting activities, noting that sports help build confidence, resilience, and a healthy lifestyle.
    The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the University’s commitment to sports development by providing necessary facilities and creating opportunities for students to showcase their talents. He encouraged students to take advantage of these platforms, participate actively in competitions, and represent the University with pride and excellence. He also assured the students of the University’s participation in the forthcoming FASU Games in Cairo, Egypt, and the NUGA Games scheduled to hold in Calabar, Cross River State, later this year.
    Earlier in her welcome address, the Acting Director of Sports, Mrs. Chukwudi Anthonia C., commended the Vice-Chancellor for his support toward the Sports Directorate within his short time in office. She appealed for the renovation of some dilapidated sporting facilities to further motivate athletes and officials and pledged the Directorate’s support for his vision, especially in advancing sports for students and staff.
    All seventeen faculties of the University participated in the week-long competition. The Faculty of Education emerged overall winner with 25 gold, 22 silver, and 12 bronze medals. The Faculty of Social Sciences came second with 11 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze medals, while the Faculty of Arts secured third place with 8 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
    Highlights of the event included aerobics and calisthenics displays, match past by participating faculties, a martial arts demonstration by the Taekwondo team, and the presentation of trophies and cash prizes to winners.
    Dignitaries present at the ceremony included the Chairman of the University Sports Committee, Prof. Derek Orji; the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Ebele Okigbo; the Chief Safety Officer, Mr. Ken Chukwura; the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Louis Njelita; and the Students’ Union President, Comrade Samuel Ochuba, among others.
