




UNIZIK VICE-CHANCELLOR HOSTS FIRST POWER ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION COMPANY MANAGEMENT, SEEKS STRONGER POWER PARTNERSHIP
The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, received the management of First Power Electricity Distribution Company Limited in his office to discuss issues relating to electricity supply to the University and strengthen the existing partnership between both institutions.
Speaking during the visit, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Okechukwu Okafor, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception and recalled the Vice-Chancellor’s earlier visit to the company. He stated that the visit was aimed at discussing critical issues concerning electricity supply to the University and other related matters.
Mr. Okafor described electricity as indispensable to the University’s academic and administrative activities, stressing that the company would not be pleased to see power supply to the institution disrupted. He commended Prof. Anyaehie for being among the company’s first twenty distinguished customers.
The Managing Director also underscored the need for the University to revive the Ring Main Unit (RMU) project, which had been suspended. According to him, restoring the RMU would significantly enhance the electricity supply to the institution. He assured the University of the company’s willingness to provide credible vendors to help address existing technical challenges.
He further cautioned against the activities of fraudsters who deceive organisations with false promises relating to electricity services, urging the University to remain vigilant.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor acknowledged that inadequate funding remains one of the University’s greatest challenges. He noted that the University had received the company’s correspondence and was committed to taking the necessary steps to sustain and strengthen the partnership.
Prof. Anyaehie also highlighted his administration’s efforts to revive the University’s solar farm, which was previously vandalised. He disclosed plans to deploy AI-powered surveillance cameras around the facility to prevent further acts of theft and vandalism.
Also present at the meeting were Mr. Ojiako Samuel (ABM, Awka), Mr. Izunna Okafor, Head of Communication, Mr. Egbujor Emeka Godwin, Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Mrs. Obi Nnenna Priscillia, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Mr. Obiajulu Alexander, Head of Revenue Enhancement, and the Chairman of the UNIZIK Task Force on Electricity, Engr. Prof. Stephen Ufoaroh.
